A Lagos accident has claimed the lives of a mother and her child after two heavily loaded 20-foot container trucks overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market, inward Apapa. The victims were trapped beneath the trucks and their containers, sustaining fatal injuries, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
The incident occurred over the weekend, prompting an emergency response involving LASTMA’s rescue and recovery personnel and officers of the Nigeria Police Force.
Lagos Accident Claims Mother and Child at Mile 2
The fatal accident occurred along the busy Mile 2 corridor leading towards Apapa, an important route for commercial vehicles transporting goods across Lagos.

According to LASTMA, the two container trucks overturned, trapping the mother and her child beneath the vehicles and their cargo.
Both victims died in the incident, leaving their family to mourn the loss.
The crash highlights the serious risks associated with accidents involving heavily loaded articulated trucks, particularly on busy roads shared by commercial vehicles and other road users.
LASTMA Deploys Crane to Remove Overturned Trucks
Following the accident, LASTMA’s rescue and recovery team arrived at the scene to coordinate the operation, evacuate the victims and secure the affected road.
The agency temporarily cordoned off the roadway and diverted motorists through an adjoining service lane to ease congestion and prevent further accidents.
LASTMA also deployed a crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle to remove the overturned trucks and their containers.
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force provided security during the recovery operation, helping maintain order while the damaged vehicles and their cargo were removed.

After the evacuation, the victims’ remains were conveyed to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for the necessary procedures.
The emergency response focused on recovering the victims, clearing the obstruction and restoring safe movement along the affected route.
LASTMA Calls for Investigation Into Truck Crash
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sadness over the deaths and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
He called on the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident and establish the circumstances that led to the overturning of the two trucks.
The investigation is expected to examine possible contributing factors, including mechanical defects, excessive loading, improper cargo distribution and driver negligence.
Establishing the circumstances surrounding the crash will help determine what happened and whether any safety violations contributed to the deaths.
LASTMA Warns Truck Operators on Road Safety

Following the tragedy, Bakare-Oki urged motorists, particularly commercial truck operators, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, secure their cargo properly and comply with established road safety regulations.
He stressed the importance of regular vehicle inspections and responsible driving, especially for operators transporting heavy containerised cargo.
“The preservation of human life remains paramount; motorists, especially commercial truck operators, must exercise heightened vigilance, ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles and adhere uncompromisingly to prescribed safety standards,” Bakare-Oki said.
His appeal emphasises the responsibility of truck operators to maintain their vehicles, observe safety requirements and take precautions when transporting heavy loads.
The Mile 2 crash has once again drawn attention to the consequences of road accidents involving large commercial vehicles and the importance of enforcing safety standards to protect lives.
With a mother and her child dead, LASTMA’s call for an investigation places the focus on establishing the circumstances of the incident and strengthening measures to prevent similar tragedies on Lagos roads.
