Travel Hurdle: Nigeria Suspends U.S. Visa Center Partnership, Applicants Now Head to Embassies

Nigerian travelers to the United States are facing a major shift in how they apply for visas. The Nigeria Immigration Service has ended its long-running partnership with a private outsourcing company in the U.S., forcing applicants to return to direct submissions at Nigerian diplomatic missions.

The move, announced with immediate effect from July 1, 2026, has already sparked frustration among members of the diaspora who now face longer trips, higher costs, and uncertainty over processing timelines.

NIS Cuts Ties with OIS Services

In a statement released this week, the Nigeria Immigration Service confirmed the indefinite suspension of Online Integrated Solution, OIS Services, the operator of Nigeria’s Visa Application Centres in the United States.

For years, OIS Services managed visa application centers across the U.S., allowing Nigerians living abroad to submit physical visa requests without traveling directly to the Embassy or Consulates. With the partnership now suspended, that option is gone.

Under the new arrangement, all applicants must submit physical visa requests at one of three locations: the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C., or the Consulates in New York and Atlanta. The NIS said the e-Visa portal will remain open for online applications, but biometric capture and document submission will now be handled in person at the missions.

The Immigration Service assured the public that processing would continue smoothly, but did not provide a reason for the suspension or a timeline for when the OIS centers might resume operations.

Added Burden for the Diaspora

The decision comes at a difficult time for Nigerians in the U.S., many of whom live far from Washington, New York, or Atlanta. For applicants in states like California, Texas, or Florida, the change means booking flights, taking time off work, and covering additional travel and accommodation costs just to submit a visa application.

Social media reaction has been swift, with many criticizing the late notice and the lack of explanation. For families planning summer travel, students resuming school, and business travelers with urgent trips, the new process adds a layer of logistical stress.

The NIS has not said whether additional consular locations will be added, or if mobile enrollment units will be deployed to ease the burden.

A Wider Pattern of Visa Restructuring

Nigeria’s suspension is happening against the backdrop of broader changes to visa processing both in Nigeria and across Africa. The United States itself is consolidating its visa operations on the continent. The U.S. State Department has directed that visa services be scaled back at many embassies and consulates, focusing instead on about 20 designated “hub” locations.

In Nigeria, Lagos has been retained as the primary U.S. visa processing hub, while operations in Abuja have faced interruptions. U.S. officials say the restructuring is aimed at aligning resources with national security priorities and improving efficiency. For applicants, however, it means greater pressure on fewer centers and increased travel costs.

There are also separate U.S. policy changes affecting Nigerians. Effective January 1, 2026, the U.S. will partially suspend the issuance of certain visas to Nigerian nationals under Presidential Proclamation 10998. This affects nonimmigrant B-1/B-2 visitor visas, F, M and J student and exchange visas, and most immigrant visas, with limited exemptions. The U.S. government clarified that the suspension applies only to those outside the U.S. without a valid visa as of that date, and that existing visas will not be revoked.

What Applicants Need to Know Now

For Nigerians in the U.S. seeking a Nigerian visa, the immediate steps are clear:The e-Visa portal remains active for starting applications online. However, all physical submissions, biometrics, and document verification must now be done at the Embassy in Washington, D.C., or the Consulates in New York and Atlanta.

The NIS has not announced any grace period, and OIS centers are no longer accepting applications. Travelers are advised to check the NIS website and contact the missions directly for appointment scheduling, as wait times are expected to increase. For those also applying for U.S. visas, note that U.S. operations continue at the Consulate General in Lagos, while Abuja has experienced periodic suspensions due to staffing and security advisories.

Diplomacy, Logistics, and the Road Ahead

Visa reciprocity has long been a sensitive issue between Nigeria and the United States. Both countries adjust fees, validity periods, and entry rules based on how their citizens are treated abroad. The current changes on both sides suggest a tightening of mobility rules globally, as countries prioritize security screening and system capacity.

For Nigeria’s large diaspora in the U.S., the suspension of OIS Services represents more than an administrative change. It’s a direct impact on access, cost, and convenience. Until the NIS provides more clarity or reinstates outsourced centers, applicants will have to plan for longer journeys and earlier applications.

The Immigration Service insists services will remain uninterrupted, but with no resumption date for the partnership and no new centers announced, many are left waiting.

As one applicant in Chicago put it online: “We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re just asking for access that doesn’t require a cross-country flight.” For now, that access runs through Washington, New York, and Atlanta.
