Arsenal confirms William Saliba faces an extended injury layoff after a back problem at the 2026 World Cup forces the 25-year-old into a managed rehabilitation program.
Arsenal confirmed that French defender William Saliba will be unavailable for an extended period after suffering a back injury during the 2026 World Cup. The center-back will not require surgery on the injury, which saw him substituted in the 30th minute of France’s semi-final defeat to Spain.
Saliba had been carrying the injury for several weeks before the World Cup and admitted during the tournament that he had been playing through discomfort. His early exit from the semi-final confirmed the problem had worsened under match conditions.
Saliba returned to London following France’s campaign before undergoing detailed examinations with medical specialists. The assessments confirmed the extent of the back problem but concluded that the 25-year-old would not need surgery.
The club confirmed on Wednesday that the 25-year-old must undergo a long rehabilitation program. “Subsequent specialist reviews on William’s return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury that will require a period of rehabilitation,” a club statement disclosed. “Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery program.”
Arsenal stated, “William’s rehabilitation will commence immediately, with continuous management of his injury, and he is expected to be out of action for an extended period. Everyone is fully focused on supporting William to ensure he is back to full fitness as soon as possible.”
The Premier League club did not provide a specific recovery timeline, leaving Saliba’s return dependent on his response to treatment. The injury ruled him out of France’s third-place play-off defeat to England as well.
Speaking during the World Cup, Saliba confirmed he had been managing the problem across multiple competitions before the tournament. “The World Cup comes round only once every four years, so you’ve got to grit your teeth,” he stated. He referenced the Champions League and the Premier League title race as reasons he pushed through discomfort.
According to BBC Sport on Thursday, Saliba told reporters he had been dealing with discomfort for months. “I’ve had some minor niggles for several months,” he stated. “I’ve been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League.”
Saliba was a cornerstone of the Arsenal defense last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions as the Gunners ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final.
Arsenal kick off their 2026-27 campaign against Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday, August 16, before the Gunners begin the Premier League season against Coventry five days later. Saliba is expected to miss both fixtures.
The center-back made six starts at the tournament, with four of those resulting in clean sheets for France. His form during the group stages and knockout rounds had positioned him as one of France’s reliable defensive performers before the semi-final aggravated the injury.
Only Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot bettered his six interceptions for France, while he also ranked second in their squad for clearances, with 24, behind Upamecano’s 27, and jointly first for aerial duels won, with 11.
Arsenal have not indicated whether Saliba’s injury will influence their activity in the summer transfer market. The club has equally not named a replacement or set out a revised defensive structure for the opening weeks of the new season.
