Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, shortly after he left the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, in Osogbo.
Adeleke arrived at the Ataoja’s palace at about 3:15pm in a motorcade of about 20 vehicles after leaving the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo, where he received his Certificate of Return following his re-election.
The shooting occurred shortly after Adeleke left the palace hall where he had met with the monarch and lasted for about 12 to 15 minutes, triggering an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy.
An eyewitness told West Trybe that the governor had already left the palace hall when the attackers opened fire.
The security personnel attached to the governor’s convoy reportedly engaged the assailants, forcing them to flee the area.
West Trybe gathered that the governor’s convoy subsequently rushed back to the Osun State Government House following the attack.
No casualty was immediately recorded, while the governor was not reported to have been injured.
The attack caused panic around the palace, with residents and traders reportedly fleeing their businesses during the shooting.
The identity and motive of the attackers were not immediately known as of the time of filing this report.
West Trybe reports that the attack occurred barely four days after Adeleke’s re-election, with his security detail successfully repelling the attackers and no casualties recorded.
