Culture, colors, and heritage shine at the 2026 Ojude Oba Festival as Abiodun celebrates unity.

The 2026 Ojude Oba Festival delivered another spectacular display of culture, tradition, and community spirit as thousands of people gathered in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to celebrate one of Nigeria’s most iconic cultural events.

The annual festival transformed the historic town into a vibrant showcase of colourful fashion, horse-riding displays, music, and cultural performances, attracting dignitaries, tourists, traditional leaders, and members of the Ijebu community from across the country and beyond.

This year’s edition held special significance as it was the first festival following the passing of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Despite the emotional significance of the occasion, the event maintained its grandeur and reaffirmed its place as a symbol of unity, heritage, and cultural pride.

Speaking during the festival, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described Ojude Oba as more than a cultural celebration. According to him, the festival represents the values of peace, unity, and communal harmony that have continued to define the Ijebu people for generations.

The governor noted that the event has evolved into a globally recognised cultural attraction that promotes tourism, supports local businesses, and showcases the rich traditions of Ogun State to the world.

He highlighted the economic benefits generated by the festival, explaining that hotels, transport operators, traders, artisans, and service providers experienced increased business activities due to the large number of visitors attending the celebration.

He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting the cultural heritage of the state, while establishing Ogun as a premier destination for tourism and cultural investment.

A major highlight of the event was the governor’s tribute to the late Awujale, whom he described as a visionary monarch whose leadership elevated the status of Ijebuland both nationally and internationally.

According to Abiodun, the late monarch dedicated more than six decades of service to preserving the customs, traditions, and values of the Ijebu people while encouraging development and peaceful coexistence throughout the kingdom.

The governor revealed that before his passing, Oba Adetona expressed a strong desire for the festival to continue uninterrupted, regardless of circumstances, emphasizing its importance to the identity and unity of the Ijebu people.

Celebrating Culture Through Tradition

He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the period following the monarch’s death, noting that the President demonstrated solidarity and concern for the people of Ijebuland during a critical moment.

The colourful presentations drew admiration from spectators and further reinforced the festival’s reputation as one of the most visually impressive cultural gatherings in Africa.

Horse-riding displays by the Balogun families also captivated attendees. The riders showcased remarkable skill and tradition, adding excitement and historical significance to the celebration.

Music, dance, and cultural performances entertained guests throughout the event, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration that reflected the spirit of the festival.

Chairman of the Ojude Oba Festival Planning Committee, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, described the event as a celebration of identity, continuity, and community. He stated that the gathering provides an opportunity for Ijebu sons and daughters to reconnect with their heritage while passing important cultural values to younger generations.

According to him, the continued success of the festival demonstrates the determination of the people to preserve their traditions and strengthen the bonds that unite them.

Several prominent personalities attended the event, including government officials, traditional rulers, business leaders, and cultural stakeholders. Their presence highlighted the growing importance of the festival as a major platform for cultural promotion and tourism development.

Observers noted that the 2026 edition further strengthened the reputation of Ojude Oba as one of Nigeria’s foremost cultural festivals. The celebration successfully combined tradition with modern relevance, creating a unique experience that appealed to both older and younger generations.

The 2026 Ojude Oba Festival concluded on a high note, leaving attendees with memorable experiences and renewed appreciation for the rich history, culture, and unity that continue to define Ijebuland.

With growing international recognition and increasing visitor interest, the festival remains a powerful symbol of cultural excellence and one of Nigeria’s most treasured annual celebrations.
