Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or after scoring 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England during the 2025/26 season, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual award.
The England captain received the honour at the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony at London’s Palladium Theatre on Monday, October 26, ending a wait that had stretched back to Michael Owen’s victory in 2001.
Kane’s triumph recognises a remarkable season in which his goals helped Bayern Munich secure major domestic honours while he also delivered for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the official “England Football announcement“, the striker scored 61 goals for Bayern and 12 for his country across 65 appearances during the season.
Harry Kane Wins Ballon d’Or Ahead of Mbappé and Yamal
Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal in the final rankings.
The result places the 33-year-old among the select group of English footballers to have won the award since its introduction in 1956.
Sir Stanley Matthews won the inaugural Ballon d’Or, followed by Sir Bobby Charlton in 1966. Kevin Keegan claimed the honour in consecutive years in 1978 and 1979, before Owen became the most recent English winner in 2001.
Kane is now the fifth Englishman to lift the men’s award.
The 2026 ceremony was also significant because it took place in London for the first time. The location paid tribute to Matthews, the first recipient of the trophy, as the award marked its 70th anniversary.
For Kane, winning in his home city added another personal dimension to an already historic achievement.
How Harry Kane’s 73 Goals Sealed the Ballon d’Or
Kane’s case rested on his extraordinary production across club and international football.
He scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga, helping Bayern Munich secure the league title. He also contributed throughout the German club’s domestic cup campaign, including a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart.
In Europe, Kane scored 14 goals in 13 Champions League appearances as Bayern reached the semi-finals. His six goals at the 2026 World Cup further strengthened his season’s record.
Those performances helped Bayern complete a domestic double and established Kane as one of the outstanding forwards of the campaign.
His overall tally of 73 goals across 65 appearances placed him among the most prolific players of the modern era. According to the official Bundesliga account of the result, only Lionel Messi’s 82-goal campaign in 2011/12 surpassed Kane’s total in the historical comparison cited by the league.
The numbers also demonstrate why his influence extended beyond individual scoring records. Kane delivered consistently across different competitions, helping his club collect trophies while contributing to England’s run to third place at the World Cup.
Harry Kane’s Reaction to Winning the Ballon d’Or
Kane acknowledged the significance of the achievement after receiving the trophy, while also recognising the teammates and coaches who contributed to his success.
“I am almost speechless,” he said, according to the Bundesliga’s official report of the ceremony.
He also reflected on the importance of winning the award in London, describing the location as something that made the occasion particularly special.
Kane was quick to recognise the collective effort behind his personal achievement.
“Without you guys [Bayern Munich team-mates] and the rest of the team it wouldn’t be possible,” he said, thanking the players who pushed him in training and during matches.
He also praised Bayern manager Vincent Kompany and the club’s staff for their contribution to his development.
The comments reflect a theme Kane has maintained throughout his career: individual recognition matters, but it is closely connected to the work of the team around him.
His victory also earned him the Gerd Müller Trophy for the best men’s striker of the year. It was his second time receiving the award, having shared it with Mbappé in 2024.
What Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or Means for English Football
Kane’s victory ends a 25-year gap between English winners and gives the national team another landmark achievement.
The wait had continued despite the emergence of several outstanding English players during the intervening years. Kane’s success now places him alongside Matthews, Charlton, Keegan and Owen in the country’s Ballon d’Or history.
His achievement is particularly notable because he has built his reputation through sustained goalscoring across club and international football. His latest season combined individual productivity with major team honours, giving his candidacy a strong foundation.
For Bayern Munich, the award also reinforces the club’s position as a destination for players competing at the highest level of European football. Kane’s performances helped deliver domestic success and a deep Champions League run before the individual recognition arrived.
The victory is also a milestone in Kane’s personal career. After years of being recognised as one of the world’s leading strikers, he has now secured the individual honour that had eluded him.
