JAMB has sacked one of its staff members for extorting candidates, the examination body announced Monday, signalling that its anti-fraud drive now targets misconduct from inside its own walls.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board confirmed the termination in its official weekly bulletin, framing it as part of a wider push to clean up both the admission and examination processes from top to bottom.

The dismissed employee was found to have exploited unsuspecting candidates; the exact details of the extortion scheme were not disclosed in the bulletin, but the board left no ambiguity about the consequences.

JAMB Zero-Tolerance Policy Now Covers Internal Misconduct

For years, JAMB’s public war against fraud focused heavily on touts, syndicates, and third-party agents operating outside the organization. Monday’s announcement marks a sharp turn inward.

The board stated plainly that the same aggression it has directed at external fraudsters will now apply to employees who step out of line. No staff member, regardless of rank or tenure, gets a pass.

“Its resolve to sanitize the admission and examination processes is not targeted at external fraudsters alone,” JAMB said in the bulletin, adding that internal misconduct would be met with the same determination.

The board described the termination as sending a clear, unambiguous message to every person on its payroll: the zero-tolerance policy on corruption covers everyone, irrespective of status or position.

JAMB also said it would not cover for staff who abused their positions or violated the trust placed in them by candidates and members of the public. The language was deliberate; the board is aware that its credibility rests on how it handles the people working closest to the process.

Extortion of Candidates: A Threat to Examination Integrity

The extortion of JAMB candidates is not a new phenomenon. Every admissions cycle, reports surface of individuals, some with institutional access, who exploit anxious students and their families by demanding money in exchange for admission assistance, result manipulation, or registration help that should be free.

When such actors sit inside the organization itself, the damage goes beyond financial. It corrodes candidate confidence in the entire system and raises questions about how deep the problem runs.

JAMB said its commitment to building a clean, accountable, and professional workforce was not rhetorical. The board’s position is that fighting fraud must begin from within if the integrity of its operations is to hold.

“Having dealt decisively with external fraudsters who seek to exploit candidates and members of the public, it would not shield or spare any of its own staff members who cross the line or abuse the trust reposed in them,” the board stated.

That line, about not shielding staff, carries weight. It suggests the board is aware that internal cover-ups have been a problem and that this termination is meant to demonstrate a different standard.

Staff Warned: Severe Consequences for Unwholesome Conduct

Beyond the single termination, JAMB used Monday’s bulletin to issue a direct warning to its entire workforce.

Staff were told to stop all forms of unwholesome conduct, particularly any act capable of undermining the board’s integrity or exploiting candidates. The warning cited established rules and promised severe consequences for violations.

The board did not specify how many other cases are under review, and no further disciplinary actions were announced alongside this one. Whether the dismissed worker faces criminal prosecution was also not addressed in the bulletin.

What is clear is that JAMB wants this moment to register. The message going into the remainder of the 2026 admissions cycle is deliberate: no employee is untouchable, and the board is watching.

For candidates who have already encountered suspicious requests for money from people claiming JAMB affiliation, the board’s whistleblower channels remain the appropriate route. The bulletin did not announce any new reporting mechanism, but JAMB’s existing complaint systems are active.

The sacking of a staff member over candidate extortion may be one name off the payroll, but JAMB is betting it sends a message loud enough to be heard by every other employee still on it.
