A wedding celebration in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano State, turned tragic after a 34-year-old man, Rabiu Mukthar, allegedly opened fire on guests, killing one person and injuring three others.
The incident occurred when Mukthar allegedly emerged from his residence while music was being played at the marriage ceremony and fired several shots towards the gathering, sending guests and residents fleeing for safety.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the shooting, saying its operatives arrested Mukthar and another person in connection with the incident and recovered the pump-action gun allegedly used in the attack.
The command’s spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed the development while giving details of the incident.
Kiyawa said the suspect allegedly fired sporadically at people attending the wedding after coming out of his residence.
“The man came out from his house while music was booming at the marriage ceremony and opened fire on the people,” the police spokesman said.
According to him, the police responded after receiving information about the shooting and moved to the area, where the suspected gunman and another person were arrested.
The pump-action firearm allegedly used during the shooting was also recovered from Mukthar, the command said.
The police spokesman explained that preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect was angered by the noise from the wedding ceremony.
According to the police, Mukthar told investigators that the organisers of the musical event did not consult him before holding the ceremony.
“He told the police that the people who organised the musical event did not consult them and that they just woke up being disturbed by the sound of the music,” Kiyawa said.
The suspect reportedly claimed that the loud music disturbed him and prevented him from sleeping, after which he allegedly took the firearm and opened fire on the wedding gathering.
The shooting caused panic among guests and residents in the area as people reportedly ran in different directions to escape the gunfire.
One person was killed in the incident, while three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were taken for medical attention, although the police had yet to disclose their identities or provide details of the severity of their injuries as of the time of filing the report.
The identity of the deceased victim was also not immediately disclosed by the police.
Following their arrest, Mukthar and the other suspect were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Kano State Police Command for further investigation.
The police said investigators would examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the roles played by the two suspects.
The recovered pump-action gun is expected to form part of the evidence being examined as the investigation progresses.
