The Nigeria Democratic Congress has appointed Ibrahim Abdulkarim, an ally of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as Director-General of its 118-member National Campaign Council for the 2027 general election.
The party announced the appointments in a statement on Sunday night, ahead of the council’s formal inauguration in Abuja on Monday, as it begins preparations for the next general election.
The NDC’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, will chair the council, while Obi will serve as co-chairman. The party’s National Chairman, Cleopas Zuwoghe, was named vice-chairman, with its vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, appointed co-vice-chairman.
Abdulkarim, an information and communications strategist and businessman from Kaduna State, previously contested the party’s governorship primary in the state but was unsuccessful.
The NDC’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, was appointed secretary of the campaign council.
The composition of the council brings together party leaders, political figures, legislators and media personnel expected to coordinate the NDC’s campaign activities across the country ahead of the 2027 polls.
A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was listed as a member of the National Campaign Caucus and appointed chairman of the National Campaign Advisory Council.
Other members of the National Campaign Caucus include the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Sidi Bomi Abdul, and Deputy National Chairman (South), Babatunde F. Alli.
Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege and Senator Victor Umeh were named representatives of the party’s Senate caucus.
Victor Ogene will chair the NDC House of Representatives Caucus, while Muktar Usman was listed as a member of the party’s House of Representatives Caucus.
The party’s National Woman Leader, Dudu Manuga, was also included in the campaign council.
For its media and communication operations, the NDC appointed its National Spokesperson, Osa Director, as Director of Media and Communication, with Ikeddi Isiguzo serving as deputy director. Constance Ikokwu was named campaign spokesperson.
The party said the council would be responsible for providing strategic direction, coordinating campaign activities nationwide and mobilising support for its candidates and political agenda ahead of the 2027 general election.
“The National Campaign Council will provide strategic leadership, coordinate campaign activities across the country, and drive the mobilisation of Nigerians behind the party’s vision of a new, just, and prosperous Nigeria,” the statement said.
The NDC also said its campaign would be based on a “people-centred and issue-based campaign”, signalling its stated intention to focus on issues and policies as it prepares for the election.
The formation of the council followed an earlier decision by the party to empower Obi and Kwankwaso to nominate their preferred leaders for the campaign structure.
The arrangement gives the two leading figures a role in determining the team that will coordinate the party’s campaign, while Dickson, as national leader, is expected to chair the council.
The appointment of Abdulkarim as director-general places him at the head of the council’s administrative and coordination structure. However, the party’s announcement did not provide further details about his specific operational responsibilities, the council’s campaign timetable or the planned distribution of responsibilities among its members.
The council’s inauguration in Abuja is expected to formally commence its activities, including the coordination of campaign planning and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
With a 118-member structure, the council is expected to draw on the party’s leadership, legislative representatives and communication personnel to organise its activities across the country.
West Trybe reports that the unveiling of the NDC’s National Campaign Council marks a step in the party’s preparations for the 2027 general election, with Abdulkarim’s appointment and the inclusion of senior party figures setting out the leadership structure through which it intends to coordinate its campaign.
