One person has been killed and seven others injured after a section of the entrance canopy under construction at the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex collapsed.
The incident occurred on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the construction site of the complex, prompting the Gombe State Government to order an immediate investigation into the cause of the collapse.
According to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Gombe State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, Danladi Adamu, eight workers were affected by the incident, with seven sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
The injured workers were evacuated for medical attention, with five currently receiving treatment at the Gombe State Specialist Hospital and two others at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
The state government expressed sadness over the death recorded and said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya had been briefed on the incident.
The government said the governor had directed that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical care at the expense of the state, while relevant agencies begin safety and accountability procedures.
The Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, alongside emergency, regulatory and technical agencies, has been mandated to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
The contractor handling the project and the consultant have also been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours, which will be followed by a preliminary investigation and comprehensive technical assessment.
The ministry said the findings would guide the government’s next line of action.
“While the investigation is ongoing, the government will allow the established facts to guide all necessary decisions and actions. Appropriate measures will be taken in line with the outcome of the investigation and applicable standards,” the statement said.
The Gombe State Government assured residents that it remained committed to enforcing safety, quality and engineering standards in all public infrastructure projects across the state.
