Several passengers travelling from Lagos to Kano on United Nigeria Airlines were left stranded at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport after their flight was cancelled following more than six hours of waiting.
The affected passengers said they were kept at the airport for several hours without clear information about the status of their flight, leaving them frustrated and uncertain about when they would reach Kano.
The incident occurred on Monday as passengers scheduled to travel from Lagos to Kano waited for an aircraft that was initially expected to operate the route.
One of the affected passengers, Alhassan Indabawa, who spoke on behalf of the travellers, described the airline’s handling of the situation as disappointing, saying passengers were subjected to unnecessary hardship after spending several hours at the airport.
According to Indabawa, the aircraft expected to convey the Kano-bound passengers was initially scheduled to fly passengers from Lagos to Enugu at about 1pm.
He said the aircraft could not depart at the scheduled time because of what he described as technical problems.
Indabawa explained that Kano-bound passengers expected to board the aircraft after the technical issue was resolved.
He, however, said the situation changed after Enugu-bound passengers protested over their delayed departure, resulting in the aircraft being allocated to them.
The Kano-bound passengers were subsequently asked to wait for the aircraft to return from Enugu, according to Indabawa.
He said the passengers accepted the arrangement after being assured that they would be flown to Kano when the aircraft returned.
“We were told to be patient and that once the aircraft came back, it would take us to Kano. We waited for several hours, only to be told later that the flight had been cancelled,” Indabawa said.
The development, he said, left the passengers confused because they had already spent several hours at the airport expecting to travel.
Indabawa said the passengers were not given sufficient information about the reason for the eventual cancellation or what arrangements had been made to transport them to Kano.
He described the treatment of the passengers as unacceptable, particularly given the length of time they had spent waiting at the airport.
“This is disappointing and amounts to disrespect for passengers’ rights. We have spent hours at the airport and nobody has given us a clear explanation or told us when we will get to Kano,” he said.
The affected passengers were still stranded at the airport as of 12:45am on Tuesday, according to the report.
By then, the travellers were reportedly yet to receive a clear alternative arrangement for reaching Kano.
The passengers were also uncertain about whether the airline would provide compensation or other assistance arising from the cancellation.
For travellers who had made arrangements around their expected arrival time in Kano, the prolonged delay and subsequent cancellation created additional difficulties.
Some passengers may have had accommodation, business appointments, family engagements and other commitments waiting for them in Kano, making the uncertainty surrounding the flight particularly inconvenient.
The incident also raised concerns about how passengers are informed and supported when airlines encounter technical or operational difficulties.
