A notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Sani Yellow, has reportedly been killed by hybrid security forces during an intelligence-led operation in Zamfara State, ending the activities of a criminal kingpin accused of coordinating attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling across the state.

Security and community sources said the suspected bandit leader was eliminated during an ambush after operatives tracked his movement through actionable intelligence.

The reported killing comes amid renewed security operations in Zamfara and other parts of the North-West, where bandit groups have continued to attack rural communities, abduct residents for ransom and disrupt farming activities despite ongoing military operations.

Sources told journalists that the hybrid force involved in the operation comprises local volunteers and reformed former insurgents from the North-East working alongside conventional security agencies in some areas.

According to the sources, the group has increasingly relied on intelligence from local communities to identify and track the movements of armed criminal gangs operating in remote forests.

A security source said Sani Yellow was intercepted while visiting a local market, where he was allegedly collecting proceeds from stolen livestock and negotiating ransom payments from kidnapped victims.

“He was positively identified through local intelligence. Once his identity was confirmed, the hybrid forces moved swiftly and neutralised him before he could escape.”

Security sources described Sani Yellow as one of the influential bandit commanders operating in forests around Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring areas of Zamfara State.

He was accused of masterminding repeated attacks on communities, organising kidnappings for ransom, leading cattle rustling operations and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.

Community sources also alleged that the bandit leader was involved in severe abuses against victims of his criminal activities. The allegations could not be independently verified.

The reported death of Sani Yellow comes months after the killing of his relative, Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo, another notorious bandit commander reportedly killed in 2025 alongside several members of his gang during an operation by local volunteer forces.

A senior defence intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security agencies were monitoring developments following the reported operation.

The official said security forces had increased vigilance around vulnerable communities to prevent possible retaliatory attacks from members of the late commander’s network.

“The security architecture is already on alert. Necessary deployments have been made to protect vulnerable communities and respond promptly to any attempted reprisal.”

Security analysts said the reported killing could weaken bandit networks operating across Zamfara, Katsina and parts of Sokoto states if intelligence-driven operations are sustained.

They, however, warned that the elimination of criminal commanders often requires continued security pressure and community cooperation to prevent possible revenge attacks and the emergence of new leaders within the networks.
