Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, will attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he is expected to engage global leaders, development partners and international organisations in a bid to attract investments and partnerships to the state.

The governor’s participation is also expected to provide an opportunity for Zamfara to present its development priorities and explore areas of collaboration on security, economic growth, education, healthcare and sustainable development.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, which outlined Lawal’s engagements during the UN General Assembly.

The 81st session of the General Assembly is themed, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

According to the statement, key meetings during the General Assembly will focus on issues including the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action, pandemic response, racial justice and nuclear disarmament.

The governor’s engagements are expected to include high-level meetings and side events involving government leaders, international development organisations, investors and other stakeholders.

The statement said Lawal’s participation would be used to showcase Zamfara State’s development priorities while seeking strategic partnerships capable of supporting the state’s development agenda.

It said, “Governor Dauda Lawal will attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York to engage with global leaders, partners, and international organisations to attract investment for Zamfara State.”

The governor’s programme will begin on September 18 with participation in a High-Level Executive Global Roundtable Side Event and the SDG Moment.

The engagements will provide an opportunity for discussions around development priorities and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in areas relevant to states and communities facing development and security challenges.

A major engagement for the governor is scheduled for September 21, when he is expected to speak at a high-level side event during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The event is being organised by the United Nations Development Programme under the theme, “From Fragility to Opportunity: Locally Led Pathways to Peace, Resilience and Investment in Fragile Contexts.”

According to the statement, the event will launch the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework (2026–2030) and provide a platform for building strategic partnerships and mobilising investments to support its implementation.

The framework is expected to bring together discussions on peace, security, resilience and development across the North-West, with emphasis on locally led approaches in addressing challenges affecting fragile communities.

The statement quoted the governor’s participation as part of efforts to find practical areas of collaboration with international partners that could contribute to peace and development in Zamfara.

It said, “This event will launch the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework (2026-2030) and help build strategic partnerships and investments to support its implementation.”

Lawal is also expected to participate in a number of other high-level meetings during his stay in New York.

Among the events listed in the statement are the SDG Roundtable Discussion 2026, the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, and the African-Caribbean High-Level Interactive Dialogue: Redefining Influence, Accelerating Action.

The governor will also attend the Nigeria Investment Forum, where discussions are expected to centre on investment opportunities and partnerships involving Nigeria.

For Zamfara, the international engagements come against the backdrop of the state government’s stated interest in strengthening development partnerships and attracting investment to support its priorities.

The governor’s office said the UNGA meetings would enable the state to engage with international actors beyond the formal sessions of the General Assembly and identify opportunities for cooperation in areas such as security, education, healthcare, economic development and sustainability.

The statement added that Lawal’s participation would “showcase Zamfara State’s development priorities, build partnerships, and find ways to collaborate on security, economic growth, education, healthcare, and sustainable development.”

The United Nations General Assembly remains one of the major annual international platforms bringing together heads of government, diplomats, development institutions, civil society organisations and private-sector stakeholders to discuss global challenges and development priorities.

Lawal’s scheduled appearance at the event will therefore place Zamfara’s development concerns within a wider international discussion on peace, resilience, investment and sustainable development, particularly through the planned North-West framework.

The governor’s engagements are scheduled to run alongside the broader programme of the 81st UN General Assembly, with his activities beginning on September 18 and including the high-level side event on September 21.

The statement was signed by Sulaiman Bala Idris, Spokesperson for the Zamfara Governor, on September 16, 2026.

West Trybe reports that Governor Dauda Lawal’s planned participation in the UN General Assembly is focused on presenting Zamfara’s development priorities to international partners while seeking cooperation and investment in security, economic growth, education, healthcare and sustainable development, alongside wider efforts to advance the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework for 2026–2030..
