Airtel Nigeria 5G expansion is gathering momentum as the telecommunications company reports adding more than 1,000 fifth-generation (5G) network sites in 2026, bringing its total network infrastructure to more than 17,000 sites nationwide.

The development marks another significant step in the company’s efforts to strengthen mobile connectivity, increase network capacity and improve service delivery across Nigeria. Alongside the infrastructure investment, Airtel has introduced a digital platform called Airtel Open Network, designed to give subscribers better visibility into network coverage and a more direct way to report connectivity problems.

The announcement was made on October 30, 2026, during the launch of the Open Network initiative in Lagos, attended by telecommunications industry stakeholders, including Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida.

The latest expansion reflects Airtel’s continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure as demand for mobile data and reliable internet services increases across the country.

According to President Bola Tinubu’s statement welcoming the company’s latest investment, Airtel Nigeria has grown its network infrastructure from approximately 15,000 sites two years ago to more than 17,000 nationwide.

The expansion includes more than 1,050 network sites added during the 2025/26 financial year, of which 657 were 5G sites.

Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Balsingh, also disclosed that the company had added more than 1,000 5G sites during 2026, further extending access to high-speed connectivity.

The distinction between total network sites and 5G sites is important. The former includes the company’s broader infrastructure, while the latter represents facilities supporting its fifth-generation mobile network.

The investment is particularly relevant as Nigerians increasingly depend on mobile connectivity for communication, education, online transactions, business operations and access to digital services.

Airtel Open Network Introduces Greater Transparency

Beyond expanding its physical infrastructure, Airtel Nigeria is introducing a different approach to how subscribers interact with the company over network performance.

The newly launched Airtel Open Network, integrated into the My Airtel Africa App, allows customers to access information about nearby network infrastructure and report service-related concerns.

The platform provides visual information about operational 4G and 5G sites, locations undergoing network upgrades and planned infrastructure deployments within a 500-metre radius of a customer’s location.

This gives subscribers an opportunity to understand more about the network facilities serving their immediate surroundings instead of relying entirely on conventional customer service channels when experiencing connectivity problems.

Customers can also submit feedback about their network experience through the application.

According to Airtel Nigeria’s announcement, the information gathered will help the company’s technical teams identify locations experiencing service difficulties and investigate the underlying problems.

The initiative is intended to create a more direct communication channel between subscribers and the engineers responsible for maintaining and improving network performance.

How the My Airtel App Will Improve Customer Experience

One of the central objectives of Airtel Open Network is to make network-related information more accessible to ordinary subscribers.

Previously, customers experiencing persistent browsing difficulties, dropped calls or inconsistent connectivity generally depended on customer care channels to communicate their complaints.

However, identifying the exact location and nature of a network problem through conventional complaints can be challenging.

The new platform provides a more location-specific approach by allowing customers to share feedback associated with their network experience.

Speaking about the initiative, Balsingh emphasised the importance of transparency in building customer confidence.

He said: “Sustained operational investment is what improves network performance; information is what builds trust.”

The statement captures the thinking behind the new platform: network expansion must be accompanied by better communication about service availability and the company’s efforts to address customer concerns.

However, the platform should not be mistaken for an automatic network repair system. Reporting a problem does not guarantee an immediate resolution. Its primary purpose is to provide Airtel with more precise information that can guide investigation and infrastructure improvements.

What Airtel’s Expansion Means for Nigeria’s Telecommunications Industry

Airtel’s latest investment comes at a time when reliable connectivity has become increasingly important to Nigeria’s digital economy.

From small businesses processing online payments to students accessing educational resources and professionals working remotely, dependable mobile networks play an important role in everyday activities.

Expanding 5G infrastructure can provide greater network capacity, faster data transmission and lower latency in areas where the technology is available.

These capabilities are particularly useful for activities involving high-bandwidth applications, cloud-based services, video communication and other data-intensive operations.

Nevertheless, the benefits depend on several factors, including network coverage, compatible devices, available spectrum and the quality of supporting infrastructure.

A larger number of network sites does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted connectivity everywhere. Location, building structures, network congestion and other technical conditions can influence the experience subscribers receive.

This makes Airtel’s Open Network initiative particularly relevant because it introduces a channel through which customers can communicate specific service challenges.

The company is effectively combining infrastructure investment with a more transparent approach to customer engagement.

Airtel’s Investment Builds on Its Previous Network Improvements

The latest announcement also follows substantial network development recorded in Airtel Africa’s 2026 financial year.In its annual report, the parent company highlighted growing demand for reliable, high-speed data services in Nigeria, describing the country as its largest individual market.

The report disclosed that Airtel Nigeria recorded a 43.4 per cent year-on-year increase in customer data usage during the reporting period.

It also confirmed the addition of more than 1,050 network sites and 657 5G sites, alongside improvements in access to 4G spectrum.

These figures demonstrate why continued investment in network capacity remains important as mobile data consumption increases.

For Airtel Nigeria, the challenge now extends beyond building more sites. The company must ensure that its expanding infrastructure translates into improved coverage, more reliable connections and a better experience for subscribers.

The introduction of Airtel Open Network provides another mechanism for pursuing that objective.

As the telecommunications industry continues to evolve, customers will increasingly expect operators to demonstrate not just how much infrastructure they have deployed, but also how effectively that infrastructure serves them.

With more than 17,000 network sites and an expanded 5G footprint, Airtel Nigeria is strengthening its position in the country’s connectivity market. Its latest digital initiative also signals an effort to make network performance more visible and customer feedback more useful in shaping future improvements.
