Omoyele Sowore, 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, proposed a ₦500,000 monthly minimum wage—over seven times the current ₦70,000—to help police, soldiers, teachers, doctors, and nurses afford food, housing, healthcare, and education. He suggested tax-free allowances of ₦100,000 to ₦300,000 for high-risk jobs and criticized poverty wages while politicians thrive. Supporters cheer the relief from 15-16% inflation, but critics highlight funding challenges, estimating ₦360 billion monthly for federal workers alone amid debt and budget strains.

The sstory was verified based on his recent post on his X (Twitter) verified Page , he made the tweet by saying ” A minimum wage of ₦500,000 is not too much for Nigerian workers. Police officers, soldiers, teachers, doctors, nurses, and other public servants deserve a living wage and those in critical sectors must earn additional allowances for the risks, sacrifices, and essential services they provide. “

Many Nigerians are happy with the statement but some also claim if that will be sustainable based on the recent debt President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put us into as a Nation.

some of the people who reacted are as listed below

@doitright1 “What happens to stabilizing the economy first so that 70,000 in January will at least remain it’s worth by December while more policies and structures are put in place to make the same amount more valuable to do as much as 500k could have done today.Make we dey reason well o”

@KunleogunadeI agree with you based on current situation and system of governance. But this can lead to inflation. But if we approach economic governance in a better way by applying price control system,we might not need 500k.We might need lesser to reduce inflation. But I agree with you.

@princeuthman001It’s nt abt a humongous numbers bt the value behd the numbers. Strengthen the naira and restore it’s purchasing power instead of mere wage rise.Provide affordable housing, improve public schools, health.

The topicc so far is still trending on X and Westtrybe will keep updating you on it.
