Tinubu Allocates ₦5.41 Trillion for Security, Approves Recruitment of Over 50,000 Security Personnel in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that his administration will continue to take decisive measures to end the security challenges facing Nigeria.

In his Democracy Day address, the President announced that the government has declared a state of emergency in the security sector and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers, alongside thousands of additional military personnel.

He revealed that the 2026 budget has earmarked ₦5.41 trillion for security, describing it as the largest allocation ever made to the sector in Nigeria’s history.

Tinubu stated that the Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded significant successes in the fight against terrorism, including the destruction of a major ISWAP stronghold in the Arege area of Borno State.

According to him, terrorism-related deaths have declined by 81 percent compared to 2015, while more than 13,000 terrorists have been killed within the past year.

The President, however, noted that the government is still providing an opportunity for repentant insurgents to surrender through the Operation Safe Corridor programme. He disclosed that more than 124,000 individuals, including fighters and their family members, have laid down their arms since 2023.

Tinubu also issued a stern warning to bandits, kidnappers and those sponsoring terrorism, urging them to surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian government.
