The wife of popular Nigerian medical content creator Aproko Doctor has disclosed that she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) within months of their marriage, a condition she said upended her health and expectations for starting a family.

Speaking publicly for the first time about her experience, she said the PCOS diagnosis came as a shock, arriving at a point when she and her husband had expected life to follow a straightforward path after their wedding.

Aproko Doctor, whose real name is Chinonso Egemba, is widely known across Nigeria for breaking down complex medical information into plain language across social media platforms. His wife’s disclosure has drawn significant attention given his professional focus on public health education.

She described the diagnosis as something that changed the direction of her life in the months after marriage, affecting her physically, emotionally, and in terms of her plans for the future. She did not provide a detailed clinical breakdown of her symptoms in public statements reviewed for this report but said the condition forced her to reckon with aspects of her health she had not previously considered.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder that affects people with ovaries and is one of the most common causes of fertility challenges among women of reproductive age. The condition presents through irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen levels, and cysts on the ovaries. Diagnosis rates have climbed in recent years as public awareness has grown, though a significant number of cases in Nigeria go undetected, largely because diagnostic facilities remain scarce outside urban centers and many women have never heard the condition named.

Medical professionals in Nigeria have noted that PCOS is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed, with patients sometimes told their symptoms are stress-related or part of normal hormonal fluctuation. A spokesperson for the Nigerian medical community who spoke on background said early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes for managing symptoms and supporting fertility.

The timing of the disclosure, coming shortly after marriage, reflects a pattern that health advocates say is common. Many women in Nigeria first seek medical attention for PCOS after marriage, prompted by pressure to conceive or by irregular cycles that become harder to ignore once family planning begins.

The Aproko Doctor has not commented publicly on his wife’s disclosure in detail, though both appeared to have addressed the matter through personal channels. The couple married in a ceremony that received wide coverage among Nigerian social media audiences.

The disclosure has reignited public conversation about reproductive health, specifically around how much information Nigerian women receive about conditions like PCOS before and during marriage. Women’s health advocates have long argued that reproductive health education in Nigeria is inadequate, leaving many women unaware of common conditions until they face fertility difficulties.

A government official at the Federal Ministry of Health was not immediately available for comment on existing national programs addressing PCOS awareness or reproductive health support.

For women living with PCOS in Nigeria, access to specialist care varies widely. Endocrinologists and reproductive health specialists are concentrated largely in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Women in rural and semi-urban areas often lack access to the kind of hormonal testing required for a confirmed PCOS diagnosis.

With the right medical support, lifestyle changes, and, where necessary, medication, the condition is manageable. Fertility outcomes for women with PCOS have also improved as reproductive medicine has advanced, though access to that care remains deeply uneven depending on where in the country a woman lives.

Health communicators have said that public figures speaking openly about diagnoses like PCOS help reduce stigma and encourage other women to seek care sooner. The willingness of a figure connected to Nigeria’s most prominent medical influencer to speak about a reproductive health condition carries weight in a media environment where such disclosures remain rare.

Figures on how many Nigerian women are currently living with a PCOS diagnosis were not immediately available from the National Bureau of Statistics or the Federal Ministry of Health. Globally, the World Health Organization has estimated that the condition affects a significant proportion of women of reproductive age, though country-specific data for Nigeria remains limited.
