The Arewa Revival Project has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing ongoing federal interventions at three major dams in Kano State as evidence of investments it says could boost agricultural production, improve food security and create economic opportunities across Northern Nigeria.

The group’s coordinator, Muktaka Ahmed Ibrahim, disclosed the position in a statement issued on behalf of the organisation, commending the Federal Government’s rehabilitation and expansion projects at Tiga Dam, Challawa Gorge Dam and Kafin Chiri Dam under the Kano River Irrigation Scheme.

The statement, however, did not specify its date of issuance or explicitly identify the signatory.

The interventions are being implemented through the Ecological Project Office under the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, with the projects targeting additional irrigable land and improvements to water distribution infrastructure.

The organisation described the projects as significant investments in agriculture, climate resilience, rural development and sustainable economic growth, arguing that improved irrigation facilities could help farmers increase production and strengthen livelihoods.

It said the interventions could enable farmers to cultivate their land throughout the year, create employment opportunities in rural communities and improve the availability of agricultural produce.

The group also argued that better water management infrastructure could help communities respond to climate-related challenges and reduce some of the difficulties associated with agricultural production.

Highlighting the scale of the interventions, the Arewa Revival Project drew attention to Tiga Dam, constructed in 1974, which has a reservoir capacity of approximately 1.97 billion cubic metres.

The facility has an estimated irrigation potential of about 230,000 hectares and supports 10 megawatts of hydropower generation, according to the information provided by the organisation.

The ongoing intervention at the dam is designed to open additional irrigation sectors in Yakasai, Gwamma and Gurjiya, covering approximately 875 hectares, through the development of irrigation canals and associated infrastructure.

At Challawa Gorge Dam, the project focuses on developing 240 hectares of irrigable land through the construction and rehabilitation of main canals, distribution channels, field canals, access roads and other hydraulic structures.

The group said the infrastructure would help improve water distribution and make irrigation management more efficient, potentially supporting farmers who depend on reliable water supplies for cultivation.

At Kafin Chiri Dam, the intervention is expected to open additional irrigation sectors covering approximately 164.91 hectares. The planned infrastructure includes main canals, distribution channels and field canals across the Kunpada, Matanfa and Maida sectors.

Together, the three interventions target approximately 1,279.91 hectares of additional irrigable land, based on the figures provided in the statement.

The organisation said the projects aligned with broader development objectives, including food security, poverty reduction, economic diversification and inclusive growth.

It also linked the interventions to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, arguing that investment in agricultural infrastructure could create opportunities for farmers, agribusinesses and rural households.

The group subsequently declared support for Tinubu’s re-election bid, saying continuity in leadership would provide an opportunity to consolidate ongoing interventions and expand development programmes.

The endorsement adds to the political activities emerging ahead of the 2027 general elections, as organisations and political groups begin expressing support for prospective candidates and highlighting government policies they consider significant.

However, the statement did not provide details of planned campaign activities or explain how the group intended to mobilise support for the President ahead of the polls.

The expected agricultural benefits will depend on the completion and effective operation of the irrigation infrastructure, as well as farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, extension services, financing and markets. The statement did not provide project costs, completion timelines or independent assessments of the interventions’ current impact.

West Trybe reports that the Arewa Revival Project’s endorsement connects its support for Tinubu’s re-election to federal investment in Kano’s irrigation infrastructure. Whether the projects deliver lasting benefits will depend on implementation, effective water management and measurable improvements in agricultural output, employment, food security and rural livelihoods.
