FilmOne Entertainment is representing Nollywood at TIFF: The Market in Toronto, placing Nigeria’s film industry inside a new international marketplace designed to connect filmmakers, distributors, buyers and investors from different parts of the world.

The Nigerian distributor is participating in the inaugural edition of TIFF: The Market, which runs from September 10 to 16, 2026, as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. FilmOne says it is one of six African buyers taking part in the market and the only official distributor representing Nigeria at the event.

For Nollywood, the significance goes beyond having a Nigerian company present in Toronto. The market creates a setting where conversations around film sales, acquisitions, partnerships and international distribution can happen directly between industry players.

TIFF: The Market is a new seven-day industry marketplace launched alongside the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF describes the initiative as a space where the global film, series and innovation industries can connect around creative and commercial opportunities.

The market’s launch comes as TIFF expands its role beyond film screenings and premieres. More than 130 buyers from 49 countries had confirmed attendance ahead of the inaugural edition, underlining the international business audience the new platform is designed to attract.

That makes FilmOne’s participation particularly relevant to Nigerian cinema. Rather than simply showcasing Nollywood to festival audiences, the company is entering a marketplace where distribution relationships and commercial deals are central to the conversation.

FilmOne’s own announcement said the company is in Toronto “to buy, to build” and to help widen opportunities for African cinema. Its participation also places Nigeria alongside other African film businesses selected for the first edition of the market.

Why TIFF: The Market matters for Nigerian cinema

International distribution remains one of the major questions facing growing film industries. Producing a film is only part of the process; reaching audiences outside the home market can determine how far a project travels and how much value it generates.

That is where a market such as TIFF: The Market can become important for Nollywood. Nigerian distributors, producers and filmmakers can use international industry gatherings to meet potential partners, discuss acquisition opportunities and understand what buyers in other territories are looking for.

FilmOne has experience in that area. The company describes itself as an independent entertainment business focused on film distribution and production within and outside Nigeria, with relationships involving international studios and distributors.

TIFF itself has also highlighted FilmOne’s role in taking Nigerian cinema to international audiences. A TIFF feature on Nollywood’s global reach notes that FilmOne has secured deals involving major companies including Disney, Sony, Netflix, Prime Video and Warner Bros.

Those relationships illustrate why distribution is becoming an increasingly important part of Nollywood’s international growth. A Nigerian film can now have a life beyond its domestic cinema run, reaching viewers through cinemas, streaming platforms and other territories when suitable distribution agreements are secured.

Nollywood’s presence extends beyond FilmOne

FilmOne is not the only Nigerian connection to TIFF this year. Nigerian films and projects have been selected across several parts of the 2026 festival programme.

Among them is Clarissa, directed by Arie and Chuko Esiri, which has been selected for Special Presentations. The Nigeria-US co-production, inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway, premiered at Cannes earlier in 2026 and is set largely in Lagos.

Daniel Oriahi’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives is also part of the festival’s Centrepiece programme, where it is set for its world premiere. The film is an adaptation of Lola Shoneyin’s novel and features a Nigerian ensemble including Odunlade Adekola, Omowunmi Dada and Bimbo Ademoye.

There is also The Spectacular Death of Prisca, directed by Kaelo Iyizoba, which was selected for Short Cuts. The project has been described as a love letter to Nollywood.

The wider industry programme adds another layer. Recent reporting on TIFF: The Market identified Nigerian titles including The Black Book 2, Dear Ajayi and Last Weekend in October among projects scheduled for CANEX market screenings.

A UK-Nigerian project, Sleepless, is also being developed through industry support at the market.

From Toronto meetings to bigger Nollywood opportunities

FilmOne’s presence comes at a time when Nigerian cinema is increasingly being discussed as part of the wider international film business rather than only as a domestic entertainment sector.

The company is also taking part in activities at the Global Africa Hub at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in partnership with CANEX Creations Inc. FilmOne said the programme is focused on conversations about African cinema, its audiences and new international pathways for the industry.

Another initiative, Nollywood Next, is being piloted at TIFF: The Market to bring together filmmakers, producers, distributors and financiers from Nigeria, Canada, the United Kingdom and the wider Black diaspora. The programme is designed around areas including film financing, co-production and global distribution.

For Nollywood, those conversations could prove as important as the films themselves. International growth depends not only on producing stories that travel, but also on building the business relationships and distribution networks that allow those stories to reach audiences in different countries.

With FilmOne representing Nigeria at the first TIFF: The Market, Nollywood has a direct presence at a new international industry platform. The immediate outcome will depend on the deals, partnerships and conversations that emerge from Toronto, but the opportunity is clear: Nigerian cinema is increasingly seeking a place in the rooms where global film business is negotiated.
