Funke Akindele birthday marks 49 years as the Nollywood actress and filmmaker celebrates another milestone after her record-breaking box office success with Behind The Scenes and a growing list of career achievements.
Funke Akindele celebrates her birthday today, August 24, as Nollywood colleagues, fans and well-wishers celebrate the actress, filmmaker and box office powerhouse.
Born Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele on August 24, 1977, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, the star popularly known as “Jenifa” turns 49 on Monday, August 24, 2026.
Her birthday comes at a time when her career is enjoying another major run, following historic box office figures, industry recognition and the announcement of a new film.
From Ikorodu To National Icon
Funke Akindele is the second of three children born to a medical doctor mother and a retired school principal father. She attended Grace Children’s School in Gbagada before obtaining an OND in Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. She later earned a Law degree from the University of Lagos.

She first became widely known for playing “Bisi” in the UNFPA-sponsored sitcom I Need to Know, which ran from 1998 to 2002. Her major breakthrough came with Jenifa, for which she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2009. She later reprised the popular character in The Return of Jenifa and the television series Jenifa’s Diary.
Her work on Jenifa’s Diary earned her AMVCA Best Actress in a Comedy wins in 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022. She now holds the record for the most AMVCA wins by an actress, with six.

Funke Akindele And Her Box Office Records
This year’s birthday celebration comes after another major achievement in Akindele’s career. Her 2025 film Behind The Scenes became the first Nollywood movie to cross the ₦2 billion mark at the Nigerian box office. The film passed ₦2.1 billion in ticket sales, setting a new record for Nigerian cinema.
The Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency, praised the achievement and described it as a major moment for Nigeria’s creative industry.
The success of Behind The Scenes further strengthened Akindele’s position among the biggest commercial names in African cinema. Her previous films, including Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Battle on Buka Street and Everybody Loves Jenifa, had already established her as a consistent force at the box office.
By early 2026, Behind The Scenes had reportedly moved beyond the ₦2.5 billion mark, surpassing Everybody Loves Jenifa as the highest-grossing Nigerian film in the West African market.
The achievement also added to Akindele’s record as the only filmmaker to have crossed the ₦1 billion mark three separate times, while her cumulative box office earnings have placed her at the top of Nigeria’s directing charts.

In January 2026, the National Film and Video Censors Board also recognised her contribution to the Nigerian box office, praising her continued commercial success and influence on the industry.
A Career Built On Storytelling And Impact
Beyond acting, Funke is a producer, director and CEO of Scene One Film Production. She made her directorial debut with Your Excellency in 2019 and has since worked on major productions including A Tribe Called Judah, Battle on Buka Street and Everybody Loves Jenifa.
Much of her appeal has come from her ability to combine comedy, family themes and social issues in stories that connect with Nigerian audiences. Her films have also attracted viewers outside Nigeria, giving local stories a stronger presence among African and diaspora audiences.
In December 2024, Akindele was appointed a UNAIDS National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria, with the role focusing on HIV prevention and awareness.

She has also worked with several major brands, including Dettol, IrokoTV and Keystone Bank. Her political journey has also been part of her public profile. In 2022, she was selected as the running mate to the PDP candidate in the 2023 Lagos State governorship election.
How She Celebrates Her Birthday
Over the years, Akindele’s birthdays have often attracted attention from fans, colleagues and brands.
Her 48th birthday in 2025 was marked with a series of stylish photos and birthday celebrations. She also shared moments from her celebration online, giving fans a glimpse into how she welcomed another year.
Tributes came from colleagues and friends, with many celebrating not only her achievements on screen but also her influence on younger entertainers.
This year, the attention is once again expected to go beyond her age. With her latest box office records still fresh, the actress has plenty to celebrate as she enters another year of her career.
What’s Next For The Nollywood Star

Funke Akindele is not slowing down. In August 2026, she announced The Four, which is scheduled for theatrical release on December 11, 2026. The upcoming project will be another major release following the success of Behind The Scenes.
With Nigerian cinema continuing to attract bigger audiences and generate stronger box office numbers, expectations around her next project are already high.
For Akindele, however, the numbers are only part of the story. She has previously spoken about the importance of putting the work and the audience first, rather than allowing records to become the sole focus.
Why Her Birthday Matters
Funke Akindele’s birthday is not just another celebrity milestone. It comes at a point when her career represents how far Nigerian film has come, particularly in the areas of production, theatrical distribution and commercial success.

From playing a teenager on I Need to Know to becoming one of the biggest names in Nollywood, her journey has been marked by several reinventions.
The character of Jenifa introduced her to a much wider audience, but the years that followed showed that her career could go well beyond one popular role. She moved into production, directing and business while continuing to build an audience around her films.
Now, at 49, Akindele enters another year with more records behind her, another film on the way and a reputation as one of the most commercially successful figures in Nigerian cinema.
For fans and colleagues celebrating her today, the birthday is a chance to honour both the woman behind the Jenifa character and the filmmaker who has helped push Nollywood’s box office numbers to new heights.

Happy 49th birthday to Funke Akindele, actress, director, producer and one of Nigeria’s biggest box office names.
