The All Progressives Congress has won all 17 chairmanship seats in the Yobe State local government elections held on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission announced the results on Sunday at its headquarters in Damaturu, with the commission saying the election was conducted across all 17 local government areas and 178 electoral wards.
The YOSIEC Chairman, Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Yabani, described the exercise as “hitch-free” and said 10 political parties participated in the election, fielding candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
“This robust participation reflects how keenly contested the elections were in several local government areas in the state,” Yabani said.
According to the commission, voting ended on Saturday, after which ballots were counted and results collated. Councillorship results were declared at the ward level, while chairmanship results were announced at the respective local government collation centres before the final declaration.
Yabani said the commission’s responsibility was to announce the results returned from the various collation centres.
“In line with the powers vested in the Commission, I shall now proceed to present the official summary of the scores obtained by the respective chairmanship candidates across the seventeen (17) Local Government Councils,” he said.
In Bade Local Government Area, Musa Kalan Dagona of the APC was declared winner with 54,312 votes, while the APC candidate in Bursari secured 24,331 votes.
Bukar Adamu won the chairmanship election in Damaturu with 18,465 votes, while Abdulmumini Usaini emerged victorious in Fika with 61,326 votes.
In Fune, Baba Goni Bade of the APC secured 74,411 votes to win the chairmanship seat, while Mohammed Musa won in Geidam with 35,832 votes.
Dala Mala emerged winner in Gujba with 27,900 votes, while Dayyabu Ilu secured the Gulani chairmanship seat with 35,999 votes.
In Jakusko, Umaru Aguwa Jakusko of the APC polled 47,653 votes, while Umara Mohammed won Karasuwa with 39,320 votes.
Idriss Mai Bukar secured the chairmanship position in Machina with 24,092 votes, while Samaila Musa won in Nangere with 37,780 votes.
In Nguru, Mohammed Ahmed Mairami was declared winner with 45,836 votes, while Salisu Muktari secured the Potiskum chairmanship seat with 58,705 votes.
Mohammed Lamido Musa Tarmuwa won in Tarmuwa with 19,500 votes, while Zanna Zakariya secured 35,848 votes to emerge winner in Yunusari.
The APC completed its sweep in Yusufari, where Adam Jibrin was declared winner after polling 31,930 votes. The results gave the ruling party all 17 chairmanship positions contested in the election.
Despite the APC’s dominance in the chairmanship contests, opposition parties secured two councillorship seats.
The Action Peoples Party won one councillorship seat in Fune Local Government Area, while the Action Democratic Party secured another in Karasuwa, according to the results announced by the commission.
The outcome means the APC retained complete control of the chairmanship positions across Yobe’s 17 local government areas, while the two opposition victories provided limited representation outside the ruling party at the councillorship level.
Yabani said the election had followed the established process of voting, counting and collation, with the commission responsible for formally announcing the results returned from the various local government collation centres.
The election brought candidates from 10 political parties into the contest across the state’s 17 local government areas and 178 wards.
The result also places the APC in control of all elected local government chairmanship positions in the state, while the newly elected councillors are expected to take their places at the ward level following the completion of the electoral process.
The YOSIEC chairman is expected to oversee the next administrative steps arising from the election, including the issuance of certificates of return to the successful candidates ahead of their inauguration.
The election was conducted amid Yobe’s continuing security concerns, particularly in areas affected by insurgency. Reports from the exercise indicated that electoral authorities had taken measures in some security-sensitive locations to facilitate voting and the movement of electoral materials.
The chairmanship results show that the APC secured its strongest numerical performances in several councils, including Fune, where Baba Goni Bade recorded 74,411 votes, and Fika, where Abdulmumini Usaini polled 61,326 votes.
The result further consolidates the ruling party’s position at the grassroots level, with all 17 local government chairmanship seats now held by APC candidates.
West Trybe reports that the Yobe local government election has produced a complete APC victory in the chairmanship contests, while the two opposition councillorship victories in Fune and Karasuwa provide the only exceptions to the ruling party’s dominance in the declared results. The outcome is likely to shape grassroots political administration across the state as the newly elected councils begin their tenure.
