Felabration 2026 begins in Lagos today, October 12, bringing a week of Afrobeat music, fashion, art and cultural conversations to the city in honour of legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Running until October 18, this year’s festival adopts the theme “Who Are You?”, placing questions of identity, culture and creative expression at the centre of a celebration that continues to connect Fela’s legacy with new generations.

The main festival takes place at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, with related activities also scheduled at Freedom Park on Lagos Island. Performers announced for this year’s edition include Femi Kuti and The Positive Force, Made Kuti, and Seun Kuti with Egypt 80, alongside other Nigerian artistes.

The 2026 edition is built around a question that invites audiences to look beyond the music and consider the ideas behind Fela’s work.

“Who Are You?” gives this year’s festival a theme that connects personal identity with wider questions about Nigerian society, cultural heritage and artistic freedom. It also reflects the continuing relevance of an artiste whose music frequently challenged authority and confronted social and political issues.

Rather than treating Fela’s catalogue as a collection of old hits, Felabration creates an opportunity for audiences to revisit the ideas that helped make his music influential in Nigeria and beyond.

The festival’s activities extend beyond live performances to include fashion, dance, visual art and discussions. Together, they give musicians, artists and audiences different ways to engage with the cultural legacy the event celebrates.

Femi, Made and Seun Kuti Lead the Musical Celebration

Music remains central to Felabration, with members of Fela’s family continuing to carry his musical tradition to contemporary audiences.

Femi Kuti and The Positive Force, Made Kuti, and Seun Kuti with Egypt 80 are among the headline acts announced for the 2026 festival. Other performers named in reports on the lineup include Apala musician Musiliu Haruna Ishola, Terry Apala, Atawewe and Ice Prince.

The participation of Fela’s sons adds a family connection to the programme, while the wider lineup brings different musical styles and generations into the celebration.

For longtime followers, the performances offer an opportunity to reconnect with the sound and spirit associated with Fela’s legacy. Younger listeners, meanwhile, can experience the music and cultural environment that helped shape one of Nigeria’s most influential musical traditions.

The festival’s importance, however, extends beyond its headline performers. Its wider programme reflects the relationship between music, performance and the cultural conversations that continue around Fela’s work.

Yeni Kuti Explains Why Felabration Matters

For Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, Fela’s eldest daughter and the founder of Felabration, the festival is also a platform for promoting Nigerian culture to an international audience.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria ahead of the 2026 edition, Yeni described the international interest in the festival as an opportunity to showcase the country’s cultural heritage.

“It’s a very positive thing because if you come to the Shrine, you see people from all over the world,” she said.

She added: “I’m glad that we are doing it and we are promoting our culture.”

Her comments underline an important part of Felabration’s identity: the event is not simply a concert series but also a cultural gathering that attracts visitors interested in Nigerian music and heritage.

The festival was conceived by Yeni in 1998, following Fela’s death in 1997. Apart from 1999, it has been held annually, growing into a week-long event associated with the New Afrika Shrine and Lagos’s cultural calendar.

Freedom Park Adds Another Dimension to Felabration

Although the New Afrika Shrine remains the festival’s principal venue, Freedom Park is also hosting a related programme under the name Underground System.

Promotional information from Freedom Park advertises activities from October 12 to 18, with live music and performances forming part of the week-long programme. The venue’s announcements describe the event as a celebration of music, movement, culture and African creative expression.

The involvement of two Lagos venues gives audiences additional opportunities to experience the celebrations while bringing the festival’s activities into different parts of the city.

Felabration’s wider cultural programme has historically included art exhibitions, dance competitions, school debates and discussions, demonstrating that its reach goes beyond the main concert stage.

Why Fela Kuti’s Legacy Still Resonates

Born on October 15, 1938, Fela became internationally recognised for his music, political activism and criticism of social injustice. His work combined musical influences and developed a distinctive sound that helped establish Afrobeat as an important part of Nigeria’s musical identity.

He died on August 2, 1997, but his influence has continued through his recordings, the musicians who draw inspiration from his work and the cultural institutions associated with his name.

Felabration keeps that legacy in public view by bringing together established performers, emerging talent and audiences from different backgrounds.

The festival also arrives around Fela’s birthday on October 15, placing the anniversary within this year’s seven-day programme.

For Lagos, the event offers a recurring opportunity to celebrate a major figure in Nigerian music while highlighting the city’s continuing role as a centre for live entertainment and cultural expression.

Felabration 2026 Runs Until October 18

The festival opens today, Monday, October 12, and runs through Sunday, October 18, with the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja serving as its principal venue and Freedom Park hosting related activities.

With “Who Are You?” as its central theme, this year’s edition invites audiences to celebrate Fela’s music while reflecting on the identity, creativity and social questions associated with his legacy.

As performances and cultural activities get underway, Felabration 2026 offers Lagos another week to remember an influential musician whose work continues to shape conversations about Nigerian music and society.
