The Turkish champions are crafting a two-part symbolic offer to persuade Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen to spurn Europe’s biggest clubs and stay in Istanbul.
Galatasaray are preparing a bold retention package for Victor Osimhen, one that goes beyond salary figures and release clauses. The Turkish champions intend to hand the Nigerian striker the iconic No.9 shirt and the club captaincy ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Galatasaray is set to offer Osimhen the iconic No. 9 jersey as part of a carefully constructed plan to convince the Super Eagles striker to remain in Istanbul and reject interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
The 27-year-old has been wearing the No. 45 shirt since his arrival from Napoli because Argentine forward Mauro Icardi occupied the No. 9 jersey. With Icardi expected to depart this summer after his contract expires at the end of June, the shirt becomes available, and the Turkish champions intend to hand it directly to Osimhen as a statement of his primacy at the club.
The No. 9 shirt is the second strand of a two-part retention strategy. The first part, the possibility of handing Osimhen the captain’s armband following Icardi’s departure, was previously reported, with club officials viewing the Nigerian as the most influential figure in the dressing room.
Turkish football pundit Ali Naci Kucuk disclosed the captaincy plan, noting that Galatasaray officials believe such a leadership role may not be immediately available to Osimhen at clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, or Chelsea, where established dressing-room hierarchies already exist.
It’s a calculated argument by the Istanbul club and not an entirely unreasonable one. Osimhen arriving at a Premier League giant mid-rebuild is a different proposition to being the undisputed leader of a squad that already treats him as its defining figure.
The potential captaincy is being viewed as recognition of both his performances and his growing stature within the dressing room, with club officials and supporters alike acknowledging his influence beyond just goals.
Osimhen’s valuation is backed by a lethal track record, including 22 goals in 33 appearances in the 2025/26 season and 59 strikes in 74 games overall for Galatasaray. Those numbers have made him one of the most coveted forwards in world football heading into the summer window.
This season, Osimhen scored 15 league goals and provided five assists in 22 matches, contributing a further seven goals and three assists across 10 UEFA Champions League appearances before Galatasaray were eliminated by Liverpool in the round of 16.
Galatasaray, who signed Osimhen permanently from Napoli in a Turkish transfer-record deal worth €75 million last year, have placed a valuation of between €130 million and €150 million on the striker and have rebuffed significant interest from top European clubs.
The 27-year-old has emerged as the priority target for Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, who is seeking a proven goal scorer to lead the line as the club prepares to return to the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester United have five strikers on their radar as they ramp up plans to replace Joshua Zirkzee, with Osimhen their stated dream target, according to a recent report. The cost attached to that dream, though, is severe.
Landing Osimhen would consume a large portion of United’s budget, as Galatasaray want €150 million to sell the Nigerian. That figure gives Galatasaray significant leverage in any negotiation, and the club appears determined to use it.
Despite growing speculation over his future, with Chelsea, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich among the clubs linked with a move, Galatasaray have maintained their position that Osimhen will not be sold cheaply. That position has not shifted despite the volume of reported interest from across the continent.
Turkish football pundit Ali Naci Küçük stated: “Galatasaray wants to give the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen if they don’t continue with Mauro Icardi. ” That statement adds weight to reports that the decision has moved past speculation and into active planning within the club.
Together, the captaincy and the No. 9 shirt represent Galatasaray’s clearest effort yet to give Osimhen an emotional and symbolic investment in the club’s future beyond just his playing contract. Financial incentives alone rarely tell the full story in high-stakes retention battles, and the Istanbul club is clearly aware of that.
Osimhen also joined his teammates on a courtesy visit to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara following the club’s 26th league title triumph, his second such visit after consecutive championship successes. That kind of institutional recognition signals that Osimhen’s standing in Turkey extends well beyond the pitch.
He is currently the second all-time highest goalscorer in the history of the Nigeria national team. At club level, he’s been equally prolific, and Galatasaray’s offer reflects just how much they believe his presence defines their identity.
Whether the shirt number and armband are enough to outweigh the pull of the Premier League remains to be seen. What’s clear is that Galatasaray are leaving nothing on the table in their bid to retain the Super Eagles forward for another campaign in Istanbul.
