The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 29 youths over alleged immoral activities during a raid on a hotel in Kano metropolis as authorities intensify enforcement of the state’s moral and social regulations.
The Deputy Commander of the board, Sheikh Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the suspects were arrested during an operation at ICU Hotel near the Specialist Hospital in Nassarawa Local Government Area.
According to him, the suspects comprised 17 males and 12 females, most of whom were between 20 and 22 years old. He added that preliminary investigations revealed that many of them had travelled to Kano from different states across the country.
“Our operatives were lucky to have arrested 29 youths comprising 12 females and 17 males during an operation at the ICU Hotel near Specialist Hospital in Nassarawa area,” Aminudeen said.
He explained that investigations were ongoing to determine the level of involvement of each suspect, adding that the board would treat first-time offenders differently from repeat offenders.
“Investigation is ongoing and those found to be first offenders, their parents will be invited and they will be warned, while second offenders will be charged to court to reap what they sow,” he said.
The deputy commander warned that the Hisbah Board would sustain raids on locations suspected of promoting activities considered contrary to the moral values of the state.
“The board will continue to raid such places that promote immorality. We call on members of the public to report locations where such immoral activities are being conducted,” Aminudeen added.
He also appealed to parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the upbringing of their children, stressing that families play a critical role in raising responsible and law-abiding citizens.
The latest operation comes amid renewed enforcement activities by the Kano State Hisbah Board. The agency recently banned the downloading and distribution of movies through mobile phones, saying the measure was intended to promote moral values and shield young people from content considered harmful to society.
West Trybe reports that the Kano State Government has in recent months intensified efforts to tackle social vices through stricter enforcement by the Hisbah Board, alongside broader initiatives targeting drug abuse, prostitution, gang-related offences and other activities authorities say threaten public morality, community safety and social stability.
