Kenneth Okonkwo Warns Opposition Voters, Says Divided Support Could Help Tinubu in 2027
Former Labour Party spokesperson Kenneth Okonkwo has stirred fresh political debate after declaring that votes for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election could end up benefiting President Bola Tinubu if opposition parties fail to unite behind a common candidate.
A vote for Obi is a vote for Tinubu’ — Kenneth Okonkwo explains why
Speaking during an interview on Symfoni TV, Okonkwo argued that the opposition cannot afford to approach the next election with multiple strong contenders competing for the same pool of voters. According to him, a divided opposition would make it easier for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to retain power.
The former Labour Party chieftain said the outcome of the election could depend largely on whether opposition leaders are willing to put aside personal ambitions and work together toward a common goal.
“If opposition votes are scattered among different candidates, the person who benefits most is the incumbent,” he said.
Okonkwo, who actively campaigned for Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, did not hide his disappointment with what he described as Obi’s approach to coalition politics. He suggested that the former Anambra State governor has struggled to embrace political compromises that often come with building broad alliances.
He questioned Obi’s willingness to participate in political arrangements that require negotiations and internal competition, arguing that leadership at the national level demands resilience and the ability to navigate difficult political realities.
The lawyer and actor also shared details of what he described as a private conversation with Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra South in the Senate.
According to Okonkwo, Umeh believed the South-East would stand a stronger chance of producing a president through a strategic alliance with northern political leaders. He claimed the senator viewed a vice-presidential position for Obi as a possible stepping stone toward achieving that goal.
Okonkwo further alleged that Obi was aware of the suggestion but chose not to pursue that path.
Neither Peter Obi nor Victor Umeh has publicly addressed the claims.
As political activities ahead of the 2027 election continue to gain momentum, discussions about opposition unity have become increasingly prominent. Many political observers believe the ability of opposition parties to form a united front could significantly influence the outcome of the next presidential contest.
Supporters of coalition politics argue that a fragmented opposition would struggle to defeat an incumbent president, while others maintain that every candidate has the right to pursue his ambition regardless of broader political calculations.
Okonkwo maintained that opposition supporters should carefully consider the consequences of a divided vote. He insisted that without a strong coalition, efforts to unseat the ruling party could become far more difficult.
His remarks have generated intense reactions online, with supporters and critics offering differing views on the future of opposition politics and the strategies needed to challenge the APC in 2027.
