Bitcoin price fell below $80,000 on October 26, putting the world’s largest cryptocurrency under renewed pressure as investors reacted to substantial exchange-traded fund (ETF) outflows, rising oil prices and uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision.

Bitcoin briefly touched approximately $79,300 during Monday’s trading, its lowest level in more than a month, as selling spread across the cryptocurrency market. Ethereum, XRP and Solana also weakened, reflecting growing caution among investors.

The decline follows a volatile period in which Bitcoin struggled to sustain its recovery towards $85,000. Several developments are now shaping the market, although no single factor has been established as the sole cause of the sell-off.

One of the clearest signs of weakening demand has come from US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Data published by Farside Investors shows that these funds recorded approximately $635.6 million in net outflows on October 22, followed by another $137.9 million on October 23. Combined, the withdrawals amounted to $773.5 million across the two trading sessions.

The October 22 outflow followed three sessions of net inflows, indicating a sharp reversal in investor activity.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through exchange-traded investment products. Their daily flows are closely watched because they offer an indication of demand for these products.

Large withdrawals can accompany selling pressure and weaken market sentiment. However, ETF outflows do not mean every institutional investor is selling Bitcoin, and the figures alone cannot establish how much they contributed to the price decline.

Rising Oil Prices Add to Crypto Market Pressure

Developments in the oil market have added another concern for investors.

Brent crude rose above $116 per barrel on October 23 amid escalating geopolitical tensions and concerns about potential supply disruptions.

Higher oil prices can increase inflationary pressure by raising transportation, manufacturing and other energy-related costs. If inflation remains elevated, central banks may have less room to reduce interest rates.

That possibility matters to cryptocurrency investors because Bitcoin is often treated as a risk-sensitive asset. When economic uncertainty increases, some investors reduce exposure to volatile investments.

The relationship is not automatic, however. Rising oil prices do not directly determine Bitcoin’s value, and other market developments can influence cryptocurrency prices at the same time.

Federal Reserve Decision Keeps Investors Cautious

The US Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 monetary policy meeting is another important development.

Investors are watching for signals about interest rates and the central bank’s assessment of inflation and economic conditions.

Higher interest rates can make interest-bearing assets more attractive relative to speculative investments. Conversely, expectations of lower rates can sometimes improve appetite for riskier assets.

The effect depends partly on whether the Fed’s decision matches market expectations. Even an anticipated decision can trigger market movements if the accompanying statement changes investors’ outlook.

The meeting does not explain the entire decline, but uncertainty surrounding monetary policy may be encouraging some traders to reduce risk while they await further guidance.

Crypto Liquidations May Be Intensifying the Sell-Off

Another factor to watch is the unwinding of leveraged cryptocurrency positions.

Leverage allows traders to take positions larger than the funds they commit. When prices move against them, exchanges may automatically close positions that no longer meet margin requirements.

These forced closures, known as liquidations, can add to selling pressure when many traders are positioned for rising prices.

A falling Bitcoin price can trigger liquidations of bullish positions, potentially accelerating a decline. The resulting price movements may then trigger further closures.

However, liquidation figures depend on the reporting period and the exchanges covered. They should not be confused with ETF withdrawals or treated as proof of the original cause of a sell-off.

Is Bitcoin Heading for a Bigger Crash?

Bitcoin’s fall below $80,000 has intensified concerns about the direction of the wider cryptocurrency market, but it does not establish that a larger crash is inevitable.

Continued ETF outflows, persistent inflation concerns and further selling could keep prices under pressure. An improvement in investor sentiment or a more favourable economic outlook could help the market stabilise.

The immediate developments to watch are Bitcoin’s ability to recover above $80,000, subsequent ETF flow figures and the Federal Reserve’s October 28 announcement.

For investors, the distinction between a temporary decline and a sustained downturn will depend on how prices and demand develop over time.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor guidance describes Bitcoin and Ether as “highly speculative investments,” highlighting the risks associated with their volatility.

For now, Bitcoin’s decline reflects several pressures converging at once: substantial ETF withdrawals, concerns about rising energy costs, uncertainty over monetary policy and the potential effects of leveraged trading. Whether those pressures ease or intensify will help determine the market’s next direction.
