The empowerment exercise was held in Umuahia and flagged off on behalf of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, by Mrs Otti, who serves as the Abia State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI. The event brought together women traders and small-scale business owners from across the state to receive direct financial support to grow their businesses and support their families.

The N50,000 grants are part of a nationwide intervention under the Renewed Hope Initiative Women Economic Empowerment Programme. According to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, 500 women from each of the 36 states and the FCT are to receive N50,000 each to strengthen and recapitalise their existing small businesses.

The programme is being implemented in collaboration with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which donated N1 billion to RHI to directly support 18,500 women across the country. Mrs Tinubu stressed that the funds are not loans but grants intended as “a seed of renewed hope” to help women recapitalise their businesses.

In Abia, Mrs Otti presented cheques of N50,000 to each of the 500 pre-selected beneficiaries and urged them to use the money wisely to grow their businesses. A representative of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Mr Ikechukwu Uka, also told the beneficiaries that the grant is meant for business creation and expansion, rather than personal expenses such as fashion or rent.

Speaking at the launch in Umuahia, Mrs Priscilla Otti praised Senator Tinubu for her efforts to tackle poverty and unemployment among Nigerian women. She said the initiative goes beyond business support, describing it as a way of “securing the future of families, educating children, and uplifting entire communities”.“The opportunities created for women to access funds, education and tools for self reliance would yield generational impact in Abia and Nigeria at large,” she said.

Mrs Otti also commended Governor Alex Otti and his administration for supporting the implementation of RHI programmes in the state.

The Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs Blessing Ngozi Felix, were also present at the event. They commended RHI for its work and encouraged the beneficiaries to put the financial support to good use.The event marked the symbolic presentation of N50 million to the 500 Abia beneficiaries.

Senator Tinubu has repeatedly stressed that supporting women has an impact that goes beyond the individual beneficiary. “When you empower a woman, you empower a household, a community and indeed, a nation.” The grants are targeted at women who depend on their businesses to provide for their families, educate their children and meet their daily needs.

By supporting existing businesses, the programme is expected to provide immediate financial relief while helping beneficiaries strengthen their sources of income. Mrs Tinubu said the initiative also reflects a commitment to gender equality and recognises women as important contributors to Nigeria’s economic development.

The foundation’s representative further explained that beneficiaries are expected to grow their businesses in ways that could create opportunities and improve the welfare of their families.

The Abia distribution is part of similar Renewed Hope Initiative empowerment exercises taking place across the country. In Cross River, 500 women also received N50,000 grants under the programme. In Delta, 1,000 traders benefited from N50,000 each. In Benue, N100 million was disbursed to 2,000 women petty traders, while 1,000 women petty traders in Nasarawa received N50,000 each. In the FCT, more than 1,000 women petty traders received N50,000 grants alongside business equipment, including sewing machines, grinding machines and tricycles.

The Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the intervention as a reflection of the Renewed Hope Agenda, with its focus on welfare, inclusion and economic empowerment.

Beneficiaries in Abia expressed appreciation for the financial support. The grants are expected to help traders restock their goods, expand their shops and deal with some of the financial pressures that come with running small businesses, without the burden of repayment.

RHI officials said the broader goal is to help women overcome business challenges, expand their enterprises, create jobs and play a stronger role in the economy.

Mrs Tinubu also praised state First Ladies, including Mrs Otti, for identifying beneficiaries and coordinating the programme at the state level.

What the Renewed Hope Initiative Means for Abia Women

Since its launch in 2023, the Renewed Hope Initiative has introduced several social intervention programmes, including food outreach for vulnerable families and business grants for persons living with disabilities. The economic empowerment programme remains one of its key efforts to support women and young people across Nigeria.

For Abia, the distribution of N50,000 grants to 500 women provides support to small businesses while giving beneficiaries an opportunity to strengthen their income and support their families. Mrs Otti urged the beneficiaries to put the grants into their businesses and use the opportunity to build enterprises that can continue supporting their families and communities.

The Abia State Government continues to work with the Renewed Hope Initiative on programmes aimed at providing women with access to skills, finance and other forms of social support in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
