Falconets beat England 3-0 at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu fire Nigeria into the quarter-finals.
Falconets beat England 3-0 on Thursday as Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team powered into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring early, goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma produced a crucial penalty save, and second-half goals from Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu completed a convincing Round of 16 victory.
The result sends Moses Aduku’s side into the last eight after a tournament campaign that began slowly but has gathered serious momentum. Nigeria had gone through the group stage with four points before producing another emphatic performance when the knockout rounds began.
Falconets Take Early Control Against England

Nigeria made the brighter start at Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała and were rewarded inside the opening 10 minutes.
Rafiu broke the deadlock in the eighth minute, giving the Falconets an early advantage and putting England under pressure. Reports from the match described the goal as the product of a strong individual move, with the Nigerian forward finding space before finishing past England goalkeeper Katie Cox.
England responded by seeing more of the ball, but the Young Lionesses struggled to turn their possession into a sustained threat in front of goal.
Nigeria, meanwhile, remained dangerous whenever they moved forward. The early goal allowed Aduku’s players to settle into the contest while England were forced to chase an equaliser.
Christiana Uzoma Saves Falconets at a Crucial Moment

One of the biggest moments of the first half came when England were awarded a penalty.
Rachel Maltby stepped up for the Young Lionesses, but Nigeria captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma stood between England and an equaliser. Uzoma made the save, keeping Nigeria in front and denying England the chance to level the game before the interval.
The goalkeeper had already been called upon earlier in the half to keep out England forward Princess Ademiluyi. Her penalty save was even more significant because it preserved Nigeria’s one-goal advantage at a stage when England were attempting to regain control of the match.
The Falconets therefore went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Akekoromowei Doubles Nigeria’s Lead
Nigeria returned from the break with the same attacking intent that had brought them ahead.
Just two minutes into the second half, Akekoromowei doubled the Falconets’ advantage. The Benfica forward reacted quickly after England failed to deal properly with a corner and found the net with a left-footed finish.
The goal changed the complexion of the game. England now needed two goals to take the contest back into their hands, while Nigeria could play with greater confidence.
Akekoromowei had already made an impact earlier in the tournament, scoring during Nigeria’s 10-1 victory over New Caledonia. Her goal against England further underlined her contribution to the Falconets’ attacking push in Poland.
Mary Mamudu Seals Falconets’ Quarter-Final Place

Nigeria continued to threaten as England searched for a way back into the match.
Their persistence eventually produced a third goal in the 73rd minute. Substitute Mary Mamudu finished from close range after Akekoromowei created the opportunity, effectively putting the result beyond England’s reach.
The 3-0 scoreline remained unchanged until the final whistle, sending the Falconets into the quarter-finals and completing one of their strongest performances of the tournament.
The victory was also Nigeria’s second win in four matches at the competition. The team has now scored 13 goals in its last two games after struggling to find the net in its opening two group matches.
From Difficult Start to World Cup Knockout Success
Nigeria’s route to the Round of 16 had not been straightforward.
Aduku’s team opened Group F with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before drawing 0-0 with China. With qualification still in the balance, the Falconets responded emphatically against New Caledonia, recording a 10-1 victory that lifted them into second place in the group behind Spain.
That result featured hat-tricks from Winner Onajite David and Ramotalahi Kareem, while Rebecca Adegbemile scored twice. Akekoromowei and Rafiu were also among the scorers.

The emphatic win set up the Round of 16 meeting with England, who finished third in Group B after drawing with Canada, beating Tanzania and losing to Brazil.
Falconets Await Quarter-Final Opponent
Nigeria will now prepare for a quarter-final meeting with either hosts Poland or Colombia. The quarter-final is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, as the Falconets continue their pursuit of a first FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
Nigeria have twice finished runners-up at the competition, making the latest victory another important step in their attempt to go all the way this time.
For Aduku’s young squad, the message from the England match is clear: after a quiet opening to the tournament, the Falconets have found their attacking rhythm.
With Rafiu, Akekoromowei and Mamudu providing the goals and Uzoma delivering when her team needed her most, Nigeria now head into the quarter-finals with renewed confidence and another opportunity to make history in Poland.
