The Federal Government’s ₦50,000 cash relief programme for vulnerable Nigerians has commenced under a new intervention designed to help low-income households cope with rising food prices and the increasing cost of essential goods.
The initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), was announced on Friday, October 30, 2026, by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro.
According to the minister, the presidential intervention will provide direct financial assistance to millions of vulnerable households, with eligible beneficiaries expected to receive ₦50,000.
The programme is intended to provide immediate financial relief while helping households manage the pressure of rising living costs.
FG Introduces NERSI Cash Transfer Programme

In his official statement announcing the commencement of the intervention, Doro explained that the programme was introduced in response to global food inflation and the increasing cost of essential commodities.
He noted that these economic pressures continued to affect households across the country, making additional financial support necessary for vulnerable Nigerians.
Explaining the purpose of the initiative, the minister said:
“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs.”
Doro added that the programme would undergo regular reviews to reflect changes in the cost of living.
He also stated that beneficiaries would receive direct notifications before any adjustments were made to the intervention.
The minister described NERSI as complementary to existing Federal Government social protection and economic support programmes.
He said the initiative aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and was intended to strengthen household resilience and economic stability.
How Nigerians Will Receive the ₦50,000 Support

The Federal Government plans to distribute the financial assistance through licensed digital financial service providers rather than requiring beneficiaries to collect cash physically from government offices.
According to Doro, selected beneficiaries will receive text messages from the approved providers requesting their consent to participate in the programme.
Once consent is given, the money will be paid directly into their accounts or mobile wallets.
The dedicated NERSI portal identifies three approved payment providers: ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo Payment Service Bank and NairaGram.
The programme’s published instructions explain that beneficiaries will receive an SMS informing them of their selection and providing the necessary steps to accept the support.
After accepting, a mobile wallet linked to their phone number and National Identification Number (NIN) will be activated for the payment.
Beneficiaries can subsequently withdraw their money through POS agents, access it through participating providers or transfer it to their bank accounts.
The portal also states that recipients do not need a smartphone or internet connection to complete the acceptance process, as the providers’ USSD services can be used on basic mobile phones.
Who Qualifies for the FG Cash Support?

The intervention is designed for poor and vulnerable Nigerian households, with beneficiaries selected through existing national records.
According to the official programme portal, selection will be based on verified national identity records and the National Social Register.
The information will be screened to identify households considered eligible for assistance.
However, the government has clarified that not everyone will be selected in the first phase.
Payments will be distributed in batches, meaning some beneficiaries may receive notifications before others.
The programme does not provide an open registration process through which members of the public can independently apply to be included.
The portal specifically warns that nobody can pay to secure a place on the beneficiary list or accelerate payment.
Important Clarification About Monthly Payments

Although the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs announced that eligible beneficiaries would receive ₦50,000 monthly, an inconsistency currently exists on the programme’s official website.
The NERSI portal’s frequently asked questions section describes the ₦50,000 assistance as a one-off payment into a beneficiary’s mobile wallet.
This differs from the minister’s October 30 statement, which explicitly describes the payment as monthly.
The distinction is important because a recurring monthly transfer would provide a different level of financial support from a single payment.
The government has not clearly reconciled these two descriptions in the published information reviewed for this report.
Beneficiaries should therefore follow further official clarification on the payment frequency rather than assume that receiving the initial ₦50,000 automatically guarantees subsequent monthly payments.
FG Warns Nigerians Against Cash Support Scams

The Federal Government has also cautioned Nigerians against fraudsters who may attempt to exploit the intervention.
Doro stressed that beneficiaries are not required to submit applications, pay registration fees or use agents to access the financial assistance.
He specifically warned Nigerians against disclosing their personal identification numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs).
The minister advised anyone uncertain about a message or approached by someone demanding money in connection with the programme to contact the official NERSI helpline.
“If you are unsure about any message, or anyone asks you for money, call the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222,” he said.
The programme portal further identifies ALAT, MoMo PSB and NairaGram as its approved payment channels and warns beneficiaries against sharing their PINs, passwords or one-time passwords (OTPs).
The government says the intervention is intended to deliver immediate assistance to households facing economic pressure while strengthening existing social protection efforts.
Further information and programme updates are available through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction’s official NERSI portal.
