A worker was rescued alive on Sunday after a fencing wall collapsed during a demolition exercise at Kofar Mata Zango in Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident, saying its emergency response team rescued the victim and rushed him to hospital for treatment.
The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the Fire Service received a distress call at about 8:49 a.m. from a resident, Naziru Ahmad, reporting the incident.
Firefighters from the service headquarters were immediately deployed to the scene, where they discovered that a residential building measuring about 30 by 20 feet was being demolished when the fencing wall suddenly collapsed.
The statement identified the victim as Sadiq Ahmad, saying he became trapped beneath the collapsed wall while attempting to escape.
“Our rescue team immediately commenced operations and successfully rescued the victim alive. He was taken to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital and handed over to his brother, Naziru Ahmad, for medical attention,” Abdullahi said.
The Fire Service said the cause of the collapse was under investigation.
It urged residents, contractors and construction workers to strictly adhere to safety regulations during demolition and construction activities to prevent similar accidents.
“We urge members of the public to observe all necessary safety measures during demolition and construction works to avoid preventable accidents,” Abdullahi added.
West Trybe reports that building collapses and demolition-related accidents remain a recurring safety concern in parts of Nigeria, prompting emergency agencies to repeatedly urge strict compliance with construction and demolition safety standards.
