The suspected Ebola cases identified in Nigeria’s North-East have prompted fresh investigations by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), with both individuals isolated as health authorities conduct laboratory tests to establish their infection status.

The agency disclosed the development on Saturday, October 31, 2026, in an update shared through its official communication channels. It said contact identification and listing were ongoing, while laboratory investigations were being conducted to determine whether the individuals had contracted the disease.

The announcement comes amid Nigeria’s ongoing response to an Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo virus, following the confirmation of an imported case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) earlier this month.

Although the identification of two suspected cases raises fresh public health concerns, the NCDC stressed that neither individual should be regarded as having confirmed Ebola infection until laboratory results establish their status.

In its October 31 update, the disease control agency provided details of the immediate measures being taken following the identification of the two individuals.

The NCDC stated:

“Two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in Nigeria’s North-East region. Both individuals have been isolated, contact identification and listing is ongoing, and laboratory testing is being conducted.

“The agency further clarified that being classified as suspected cases does not automatically mean the individuals have Ebola disease.”

Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” it explained.

The ongoing contact identification exercise is intended to establish whether other individuals may have been exposed and require monitoring.

However, the agency has not publicly identified the states where the two suspected cases were detected. Their ages, travel histories, circumstances surrounding their identification and possible exposure sources have also not been disclosed in the announcement.

No laboratory results confirming either infection were included in the update.

The NCDC said it would provide further information as verified details become available.

Nigeria’s Previous Confirmed Ebola Case

The latest development follows Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola disease case on October 20, 2026.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the confirmed patient was a 42-year-old woman who had recently travelled to Nigeria from Uganda.

She arrived in Abuja on October 3 through Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and subsequently developed symptoms on October 7.

She was admitted to a private health facility in the FCT on October 11. Following investigations and laboratory testing, the NCDC National Reference Laboratory confirmed the infection on October 20.

The infection was identified as Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola disease.

Following the confirmation, health authorities commenced contact tracing, initially identifying 44 people who might have been exposed to the patient. The number subsequently increased as investigations expanded.

In its October 29 situation report, the NCDC disclosed that 62 contacts linked to the confirmed case had been identified, categorised and placed under follow-up.

The agency also reported that exposure remained confined to a single epidemiological cluster directly linked to the original patient.

The 42-year-old woman was subsequently evacuated to Switzerland on October 26 following a formal request from her country and clearance from Nigerian authorities.

The October 29 report recorded one confirmed case, no deaths among confirmed cases and no contacts who had tested positive at the time of reporting.

The newly announced North-East cases represent another development requiring investigation, although the NCDC has not established a connection between them and the earlier confirmed infection.

What Nigerians Should Know About Ebola

Ebola is a serious infectious disease caused by viruses belonging to the Orthoebolavirus genus. The Bundibugyo virus is one of the species associated with outbreaks in humans.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the disease can spread through direct contact with the blood, secretions and other bodily fluids of an infected person, including someone who has died from the infection.

Transmission can also occur through contact with objects contaminated by infected bodily fluids.

The disease does not spread simply because someone shares the same environment with an infected person. Direct exposure to infectious bodily fluids is a major route of transmission.

Symptoms can include sudden fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These may be followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and other complications.

The WHO explains that the incubation period ranges from two to 21 days.

Importantly, these symptoms can resemble those of other illnesses, making laboratory investigations necessary to establish an accurate diagnosis.

The WHO also notes that early supportive medical care, including rehydration and treatment of symptoms, can improve survival.

NCDC Issues Public Health Advisory

Following the identification of the suspected cases, the NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain personal hygiene and follow established public health guidance.

The agency advised:

“The public is advised to maintain good hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and follow guidance from public health authorities.”

It also emphasised that further updates would be provided as verified information became available.

The advisory comes as public health authorities continue surveillance, laboratory investigations and contact monitoring in response to the confirmed Ebola infection and subsequent suspected cases.

In its October 25 briefing, the NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, explained that Nigeria’s response involved coordinated efforts by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the FCT health authorities, relevant government agencies and technical partners.

He also highlighted the importance of identifying and monitoring people who may have been exposed, strengthening infection prevention measures in healthcare facilities and maintaining laboratory capacity.

The agency said contacts linked to the confirmed patient would be monitored for 21 days following their last possible exposure.

For members of the public, the immediate priority is to follow official health advisories, practise proper hand hygiene and seek medical attention when experiencing concerning symptoms rather than attempting to diagnose themselves.

The identification of two suspected cases does not establish that Ebola has spread to the North-East. Their laboratory results will determine whether the suspected infections are confirmed.

For now, investigations and contact identification remain ongoing as Nigeria’s health authorities work to establish the status of the cases and prevent further transmission.
