Neymar has announced his retirement from international football after Brazil’s elimination from the World Cup brought an end to his 14-year Seleção career.

The 32-year-old confirmed the decision through a statement released by his camp, saying he had nothing left to prove at the international level and was stepping away from national duty permanently.

Brazil’s World Cup exit triggered the announcement, which Neymar said had been building for some time.

Neymar’s International Career Comes to a Close

Neymar made his debut for Brazil in 2010 and went on to become the country’s all-time top scorer, surpassing Pelé’s long-standing record before injuries and inconsistent form complicated his final years at the international level.

His Brazil career spanned four World Cups. He was part of the squad that suffered the infamous 2014 semi-final defeat on home soil, carried the team through multiple qualifying campaigns, and remained a central figure even as his club form dipped.

The retirement ends speculation that had followed him through a difficult stretch of injuries with club side Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

No date has been given for a formal announcement event. His representatives have not named a specific next step in his career planning.

Brazil’s World Cup Exit and the End of an Era

Brazil’s exit from the tournament was the immediate trigger for Neymar’s decision, according to reports. The result closed what many observers had already identified as the last realistic shot at a World Cup winners’ medal for a player who had made chasing that trophy the defining ambition of his career.

Brazil have not won the World Cup since 2002. Neymar had spoken in multiple interviews over the years about how much a sixth star on the national shirt meant to him. That goal now remains unfinished.

The Confederation of Brazilian Football, known as the CBF, has not issued a formal response to the retirement as of the time of filing. No Brazilian football federation official has been quoted on the record.

Coach Dorival Júnior, who managed the side through the tournament, is expected to face questions about squad rebuilding in the coming weeks.

What Neymar’s Exit Means for Brazil Going Forward

Brazil now face a rebuild heading into the next World Cup cycle. The national team will need to identify a new focal point for their attack.

Vinicius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Endrick are already established in the setup and represent the next generation. The question for the CBF is whether any of them can carry the level of expectation that Neymar absorbed throughout his international career.

Neymar’s influence on the Brazil squad was not purely statistical. He was the player opposition teams targeted tactically, and that pressure shaped how Brazil set up across multiple tournaments.

Removing him from the equation changes the dynamic for whoever succeeds Dorival Júnior or continues under him.

For Brazilian supporters, the retirement closes a chapter that produced extraordinary individual moments but never delivered the one result the country wanted most.

Neymar’s Legacy in International Football

Across his international career, Neymar represented Brazil in the Olympics, the Copa América, and four consecutive World Cups. He won Olympic gold in 2016 at the Rio Games, a moment widely cited as the peak of his national team experience.

He finishes as Brazil’s record scorer, a fact that will anchor his legacy regardless of the criticism he faced during difficult tournaments.

Outside Brazil, Neymar was consistently ranked among the best players of his generation. A career that began at Santos took him to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and eventually Saudi Arabia, where persistent injuries limited his appearances.

His international retirement does not signal the end of his club career. His camp has not indicated he is stepping away from football entirely.

The focus now shifts to what Brazil will do next. A new era begins without the player who defined their attacking identity for more than a decade.

For Neymar, the chapter with the Seleção is closed.
