Nigeria and Germany hold high-level bilateral talks in Abuja on Wednesday as Foreign Ministers Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Wadephul meet on trade, security, and climate.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, received her German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.
Both countries convened the consultations to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, renewable energy, climate action, security, education, and technology. The ministry released the statement on Tuesday ahead of the scheduled Wednesday session.
The ministry stated, “The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, will receive the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, His Excellency Johann David Wadephul, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, for high-level bilateral consultations aimed at further strengthening the longstanding relations between both countries.
Germany ranks among Nigeria’s largest trading partners in Europe and has maintained longstanding cooperation with the country across energy, agriculture, migration, healthcare, and security.
The ministry’s statement described the scope of expected discussions in concrete terms. “The bilateral consultations will provide an opportunity for both Ministers to undertake a comprehensive review of Nigeria-Germany relations and assess the progress made in implementing existing bilateral agreements and areas of cooperation,” the ministry stated, adding that discussions were expected to focus on expanding economic and commercial partnerships and attracting greater German investment into Nigeria’s priority sectors.
The consultations come as Nigeria moves to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with key international partners in pursuit of foreign investment, technology transfer, and sustainable development.
The ministry outlined additional priorities for Wednesday’s session. Discussions are expected to cover enhancing cooperation in renewable energy and green industrialization, promoting vocational education and skills development, and strengthening collaboration in science, technology, and innovation, according to the statement.
The ministry described the basis of the relationship in its Tuesday statement. “The visit reflects the enduring partnership between Nigeria and Germany, which spans several decades and is anchored on mutual respect, shared democratic values, economic cooperation, and a common commitment to promoting regional and global peace, security, stability, and sustainable development,” the ministry stated.
“Germany remains one of Nigeria’s foremost strategic partners in Europe, with cooperation spanning trade and investment, renewable energy, climate action, technical assistance, education, healthcare, migration, agriculture, digital innovation, and security.
On Nigeria’s broader commitment, the ministry stated: “The Federal Government of Nigeria values its strategic partnership with the Federal Republic of Germany and remains committed to deepening bilateral cooperation in areas of shared interest for the mutual benefit of both countries and their peoples.”
Wednesday’s session carries a review function alongside a forward-looking agenda. Both ministers are expected to assess progress on existing bilateral agreements before exploring new areas of collaboration, the ministry confirmed.
The ministry closed its statement with a direct expression of confidence in the outcome. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is confident that the visit of the German Foreign Minister will further strengthen the excellent relations between Nigeria and Germany while reaffirming the shared resolve of both countries to address common global challenges through dialogue, partnership, and constructive engagement,” Ebienfa’s statement read.
Nigeria and Germany’s bilateral talks of this nature cover wide ground. The ministry’s statement cited digital innovation, agriculture, migration, and healthcare as established pillars alongside the newer focus on green industrialization and renewable energy cooperation.
The Federal Government, in the same statement, confirmed its forward position: “Nigeria looks forward to productive engagements that will further consolidate the existing friendship and open new avenues for collaboration in support of inclusive economic growth, regional stability, and shared prosperity.
Both capitals regard Wednesday’s high-level session as a platform to advance that stated position on trade, security, and climate cooperation.
