Nollywood Guinness World Record history was made in Lagos as more than 51,000 people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square to watch the crime thriller Black Market on Saturday, September 26.

What began as an ambitious plan to bring 50,000 movie lovers together for one screening ended with a new global record after Guinness World Records confirmed 51,000 viewers as the qualifying attendance.

The huge turnout turned the iconic Lagos venue into a massive open-air cinema and gave the Nigerian film industry one of its most unusual moments in recent years.

The record-breaking screening was held at , Lagos, as part of the premiere of Black Market, a Nollywood crime thriller directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay.

Organisers had set their sights on the existing record of 43,624 people, established in 2015 when the Filipino film Felix Manalo was screened at the Philippine Arena.

Their original target was 50,000 simultaneous viewers.

By the time the screening was completed, however, the Guinness verification figure stood at 51,000 qualifying viewers, putting the Nigerian production above the previous benchmark.

The distinction between the overall crowd and the qualifying attendance is important.

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat said about 64,000 people attended the event. Guinness World Records, however, used 51,000 as the qualifying figure because the record depended on viewers who remained for the required duration of the screening.

That figure was enough to secure the record.

Thousands turn up for the Lagos screening

The atmosphere at TBS began building several hours before the movie was screened.

The gates opened at about 2pm, while the red carpet followed later in the afternoon. The main screening was scheduled for the evening, giving attendees time to arrive, take part in entertainment activities and settle into the massive venue.

Long queues formed as movie lovers made their way into the square.

The event was not limited to the movie itself. Music, games, food and other entertainment activities were included as part of the programme, creating the feel of a major entertainment gathering rather than a conventional cinema premiere.

The eventual announcement of the record was met with cheers and celebrations, with fireworks adding to the moment.

What Black Market is about

Behind the record-breaking crowd is a crime thriller centred on five women caught up in a dangerous cross-border smuggling operation.

The story explores economic pressure, fuel scarcity and the difficult choices faced by the women as their illegal business takes a darker turn.

The situation becomes more complicated when the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped, pushing the characters into a struggle that threatens to unravel everything around them.

The film was directed by Gimsay and co-written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed.

Its cast includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe, among others.

Nora Awolowo produced the project through Rixel Studios, with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production also involved.

A major moment for Nollywood

The scale of the screening gave Black Market attention beyond the film itself.

Instead of relying solely on conventional cinema attendance, the production team turned its premiere into a large public event and built the Guinness attempt around the experience.

It also placed Nigerian film in an unusual global-record conversation.

For Nollywood, the achievement is notable because the record was not based on box-office revenue, streaming figures or the number of countries where a film was released. It was based on the number of people physically watching the same movie at the same location.

That made the crowd at TBS part of the story.

The record-breaking premiere is only the beginning of the film’s theatrical journey.

Following the historic screening, Black Market is preparing for its wider theatrical release, giving audiences who were not at TBS an opportunity to see the film in cinemas.

The record also gives the production an unusual promotional story heading into its release.

For the thousands who gathered in Lagos, the September 26 screening was more than a movie premiere. It became an event that placed Nollywood, Lagos and Black Market in the Guinness World Records spotlight.

The final figure may have been lower than the total crowd at TBS, but 51,000 qualifying viewers were enough to turn an ambitious target into a confirmed record.
