Tinubu in Paris marked the second phase of President Bola Tinubu’s three-week European leave, with the Nigerian leader arriving in France on September 13 before French President Emmanuel Macron hosted him to a private dinner at the Élysée Palace four days later.

The Paris visit has attracted attention because it combined a scheduled presidential vacation with a private engagement involving one of Nigeria’s key European partners. While the Presidency described the dinner as reflecting the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and France, details of the conversation between the two leaders were not made public.

Tinubu in Paris After London Stay

President Tinubu arrived in Paris on Sunday, September 13, 2026, moving into the second phase of the European leave that began in London.

The President had departed Abuja on August 30 for a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave. In the announcement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency described the trip as a working vacation and said Tinubu would return to Nigeria after the break.

The initial announcement identified London as his first destination but did not provide a complete itinerary for the rest of the European trip. His subsequent arrival in Paris confirmed France as the next stop.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to France, Emmanuel Ayodele Oke, received Tinubu upon his arrival in the French capital. The development was reported by Voice of Nigeria and several Nigerian news organisations, which described the Paris leg as a continuation of the President’s scheduled three-week leave.

The President’s movement from London to Paris therefore formed part of the broader leave announced by the Presidency rather than a separately announced state visit.

The most significant development during Tinubu’s stay in France came on Thursday, September 17, when Macron hosted the Nigerian President for a private dinner at the Élysée Palace.

The Nigerian State House confirmed the engagement in a statement issued on Friday, September 18. According to the Presidency, the dinner reflected the enduring relationship between Nigeria and France and the two countries’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Photographs from the engagement showed Tinubu and Macron together at the French presidential palace. Another photograph released from the dinner included Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron.

Tinubu also referred to the meeting on his official social media account, describing the dinner as a reaffirmation of the friendship between Nigeria and France. He thanked Macron for his hospitality and friendship. Channels Television reported the President’s remarks following the meeting.

Despite the public confirmation of the meeting, neither government released a detailed account of the subjects discussed during the private dinner.

Nigeria-France Ties Behind the Engagement

The meeting comes against the background of longstanding diplomatic and economic relations between Abuja and Paris.

France remains an important European partner for Nigeria, with relations covering areas including trade, investment, security and broader economic cooperation. Presidential contacts between Tinubu and Macron have formed part of efforts by both countries to maintain those ties.

The Presidency’s description of the dinner focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation rather than announcing a new agreement or specific policy decision. No fresh deal or major diplomatic initiative was publicly attached to the September 17 dinner in the State House statement.

That distinction is important because the meeting took place while Tinubu was officially on annual leave. Although the Presidency has described the European break as a working vacation, the private dinner was not presented as a formal state visit or accompanied by a detailed diplomatic communiqué.

What Is Known About Tinubu’s European Leave

Tinubu’s European trip began on August 30, when he left Abuja for London. The Presidency said at the time that the President would spend three weeks on vacation and return home afterward.

The State House also linked his return to preparations ahead of the January 2027 election, saying he would resume activities after the working vacation.

After spending the first portion of the leave in London, Tinubu travelled to Paris on September 13. His arrival was received by Ambassador Oke, marking the publicly confirmed second phase of the trip.

The Paris leg subsequently produced the private engagement with Macron, bringing an element of diplomacy into what had otherwise been presented primarily as the President’s annual leave.

No Details Released on Private Dinner

For now, the exact issues discussed by Tinubu and Macron remain undisclosed.

The available official information confirms the dinner, identifies the two presidents as participants and describes the broader objective as maintaining and deepening Nigeria-France cooperation. It does not provide a detailed list of agreements, negotiations or policy decisions reached during the encounter.

That means claims about specific deals or commitments arising from the dinner would go beyond what has been publicly confirmed.

Tinubu’s Paris stop nevertheless adds another high-level contact to the relationship between Nigeria and France. Coming during the second phase of his European leave, the dinner also highlights the way presidential travel can combine private time with diplomatic engagements.

As of September 19, the confirmed picture is straightforward: Tinubu began his three-week European leave in London, moved to Paris on September 13, and was hosted by Macron at the Élysée Palace on September 17. The Presidency has presented the meeting as a reflection of strong Nigeria-France relations, while the substance of the private conversation remains undisclosed.
