Imagine approaching your 30th birthday without a stable career, substantial savings, a serious relationship or a clear plan for the future. Meanwhile, people around you are announcing engagements, buying houses, raising children and celebrating professional achievements.

Suddenly, your age feels less like a number and more like a deadline.

The pressure to have your life together before 30 reflects a collision between traditional expectations, economic realities and a culture that makes other people’s achievements increasingly visible.

But who decided that adulthood should follow this particular timetable?

Who Decided What Adulthood Should Look Like?

For generations, adulthood has commonly been associated with earning an income, establishing a household, marrying and raising children. However, there has never been one universal sequence or timetable.

In his 2000 paper, Emerging Adulthood: A Theory of Development from the Late Teens Through the Twenties, psychologist Jeffrey Jensen Arnett argued that the period between adolescence and established adulthood can involve extended exploration of identity, relationships and careers.

His research challenges the assumption that everyone should complete the same milestones at similar ages. Education, family circumstances, culture and economic opportunities influence how people experience this transition.

Yet familiar expectations can persist even when the conditions surrounding them change. Turning 30 consequently becomes a symbolic assessment of whether someone has achieved enough, even though the age itself cannot determine the success of a person’s life.

How Social Media Makes Everyone Else Look Ahead

Social media has expanded the number of people against whom individuals compare themselves.

A single scrolling session might reveal a former classmate’s promotion, an influencer’s new house, a friend’s engagement and an entrepreneur celebrating business success.

These achievements may be genuine, but the collection presents an incomplete picture. A wedding photograph cannot explain a couple’s private circumstances, just as a business announcement does not necessarily reveal its financial obligations or the support behind it.

Research published in SSM – Mental Health in 2024 examined 78 studies on social media use and positive well-being outcomes. The meta-analysis found that social comparison on social media was associated with lower well-being, although relationships varied across different forms of use.

This does not establish that social media inevitably causes dissatisfaction. It does, however, help explain why repeatedly comparing one’s circumstances with carefully selected portrayals of other people’s lives may undermine satisfaction.

The result is a contradiction: social media exposes people to more possible ways of living while making them feel that they should achieve several versions of success simultaneously.

Nigeria’s Economic Reality Complicates the Timeline

Financial independence requires more than determination. It also depends on employment opportunities, earnings, living expenses and access to resources.

Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics reported an unemployment rate of 8.4 per cent among people aged 15–24 in its first-quarter 2024 Labour Force Survey. The proportion of young people aged 15–24 who were not in employment, education or training stood at 14.4 per cent.

These indicators measure different aspects of labour-market participation. Neither tells us why a particular person delays marriage or homeownership, but both provide context for understanding the opportunities available to young Nigerians.

The National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 established a national minimum wage of ₦70,000 monthly for covered workers, subject to the law’s provisions and exemptions. This is a statutory wage floor, not a measure of what every Nigerian earns.

Housing circumstances also vary considerably. Nigeria’s 2023–2024 General Household Survey provides information on household ownership and renting, while its data show substantial differences between urban and rural settings. Household homeownership figures should not be confused with the proportion of young adults who can independently afford a property.

For young people managing irregular income, education expenses or family responsibilities, building savings and establishing an independent household may require more time. Those receiving substantial financial support may follow a different path.

Judging both groups against the same deadline ignores these differences.

Marriage, Family and the Pressure to ProvideIn Nigeria, expectations surrounding adulthood can extend beyond personal achievement. Family responsibilities, religious beliefs and community traditions may influence when people are expected to marry, establish careers or begin supporting relatives.

These expectations differ across communities and households, but research illustrates how strongly financial circumstances can intersect with marriage.

In his 2020 study, Masculinity, Money, and the Postponement of Parenthood in Nigeria, anthropologist Daniel Jordan Smith drew on decades of ethnographic research and interviews in southeastern Nigeria.

Smith explained that “money has become central to the performance of their most important relationships associated with social reproduction.”

His research examined how financial expectations surrounding weddings, marriage and fatherhood contributed to some men’s decisions to postpone these commitments. One participant described the difficulty of affording wedding ceremonies and supporting a family.

The findings reveal a tension: marriage may remain socially important even when the resources needed to fulfil expectations surrounding it are difficult to obtain.

Research by Barbara Crossouard and colleagues, published in the Journal of Sociology in 2022, similarly explored the ambitions and everyday circumstances of young people in four rural southern Nigerian communities. Their interviews and focus groups documented how education, low-paid work and family obligations shaped young people’s imagined futures, with particularly strong gender differences.

These studies offer important insights, but their findings should not be generalised to every Nigerian community. They demonstrate how social expectations interact with economic conditions rather than establishing one national experience.

When Age Becomes a Measure of Self-Worth

Rigid deadlines can make ordinary uncertainty feel like personal failure.

Someone may accept an unsuitable job because they believe they should already have a settled career. Another person might rush into a relationship to avoid feeling left behind.

These outcomes are not inevitable, but they illustrate how external expectations can influence consequential decisions.

There is also a risk of overlooking achievements that receive little public recognition. Supporting relatives, completing education while working, developing professional skills or recovering from a setback may represent substantial progress without producing the celebrations commonly displayed online.

Having ambitions is not the problem. The difficulty arises when every ambition becomes a deadline, regardless of personal circumstances or changing priorities.

What If Success Has No Universal Deadline?

Questioning the age-30 timeline does not mean abandoning responsibility. Financial planning, career development and thoughtful decisions about relationships remain important.

The more useful question is whether a milestone reflects a person’s genuine priorities or is being pursued mainly to avoid criticism and comparison.

Would buying a house remain a priority if nobody knew about it? Is marriage something someone genuinely wants, or does remaining unmarried feel unacceptable primarily because of other people’s opinions?

The answers will differ. Some people will achieve traditional milestones early and be content with their choices. Others will reach them later, pursue different goals or revise their plans as circumstances change.

Turning 30 can provide an opportunity for reflection, but it cannot independently determine whether a life has been successful.

Are we building the lives we genuinely want, or are we rushing to meet deadlines that society created for us?
