Hundeyin argued that Abacha’s administration’s achievements have been overshadowed by its human-rights record, a framing that sets his position apart from the dominant public narrative around the former head of state, who ruled Nigeria from November 1993 until his death in June 1998.

In the interview, Hundeyin said he considered Abacha the closest Nigeria had come to having an “ambitious nationalist” whose time in power was long enough for his vision to potentially become reality.

That is not a small claim. It places Abacha above every elected civilian president Nigeria has had, in Hundeyin’s personal assessment, including figures such as Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan.

Hundeyin said Abacha’s government made two major mistakes, the first being its failure to effectively communicate its achievements to Nigerians and the international community. He did not name the second mistake in the report.

Hundeyin, who was born in 1990 and grew up during Abacha’s rule, said that as a child, the main thing he heard about the former leader was that he was a “murderous dictator.”

He acknowledged that his personal experience may have been influenced by having wealthy parents who shielded him from some of the realities of the period but argued that economic figures should also be considered when assessing Abacha’s government.

On the economy, Hundeyin pointed to one figure in particular. “He brought inflation down from 75% to single digits in just under two years,” Hundeyin claimed, adding that Abacha’s government also funded nuclear research and pursued strategic infrastructure investment as part of a broader national development agenda.

That specific claim, a drop from 75% to single-digit inflation inside two years, is the kind of number that invites scrutiny. Hundeyin offered it without a cited source in the interview as reported.

Hundeyin argued that discussions about Abacha have largely focused on the repression and corruption associated with his government, while, in his view, less attention has been given to the administration’s economic and strategic policies.

Hundeyin is a Nigerian journalist and author who founded West Africa Weekly, a Substack newsletter that covers politics, business, and current affairs across the region and has attracted a substantial readership since its launch.

In 2022, he published investigative articles on Nigerian presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, tech start-up Flutterwave, and the BBC’s West Africa operations.

His comments on Abacha arrive at a moment when Nigeria’s political memory is itself contested, with a new generation of commentators reassessing the military era through economic and geopolitical lenses rather than strictly through human rights.

The remarks have drawn pushback. One commenter on the original report drew a direct comparison to arguments that minimize historical atrocities by pointing to economic performance, saying that anyone who lived through the Babangida and Abacha periods would understand why that framing fails.

Hundeyin did not deny the repression. His argument, as reported, is that the repression has consumed all available oxygen in the historical conversation, leaving economic and policy achievements with no audience.

Whether that argument holds depends on which Nigerians you ask. Those who lost relatives to state-sponsored violence under Abacha’s rule between 1993 and 1998 are unlikely to find the inflation figures persuasive. Those who lived through the foreign-exchange crisis of earlier administrations may read the same period differently. Prominent human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the now-dissolved Civil Liberties Organisation, documented dozens of extrajudicial killings and arbitrary detentions during that period.

The journalist’s core position, that Abacha is “the most misunderstood president of all time,” frames the problem as one of communication and historical record rather than as a defense of the human rights abuses documented during military rule.

What Hundeyin’s interview does not settle is who gets to define “misunderstood” and whether reframing Abacha’s economic record changes what that record cost the people who paid for it.
