Nasir El-Rufai, who has been held by the ICPC since February 18, 2026, has been named to the Presidential Campaign Council of Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress candidate for the 2027 election. The appointment raises questions no statement has answered.
Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, had met the party’s National Working Committee in Abuja on September 16, as pressure grew inside the party to finalize its campaign structures. El-Rufai faces four separate criminal trials: three corruption cases brought by the ICPC and a wiretapping case filed by the Department of State Services. His appointment to an active campaign council means he now holds a formal role in Nigeria’s most watched presidential race while unable to exercise it from outside a detention facility.
El-Rufai appeared before the Federal High Court in Kaduna on March 24, 2026, for arraignment on charges of money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office. The ICPC alleged he awarded contracts worth billions of naira, including a ₦4.61 billion CCTV project and a separate $22.47 million contract, in breach of procurement laws.
The latest bail ruling, delivered by D.H. Khobo of the Kaduna High Court on June 29, 2026, came after El-Rufai applied for bail on health grounds. As 2027 election campaigns gather pace, El-Rufai is behind bars and absent from the opposition frontline. His absence has removed a politician known for organizational ability, strategic calculations, and a capacity for sound bites capable of unsettling opponents.
El-Rufai’s family has framed his trials as political persecution. The ADC and Atiku have called him a prisoner of conscience, while allies have sought US involvement through a lobbyist. The government has cast his troubles as purely judicial rather than political.
Campaigns for presidential and National Assembly candidates officially commenced on August 19, 2026, in line with INEC’s timetable. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on January 16, 2027.
