Tinubu, Yusuf, Bayero Posters Appear Around Kano Power Centres

Posters bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, have appeared at strategic locations around Kano metropolis, including roads leading to the Government House and the palaces occupied by the state’s two rival emirs.

The posters were sighted along State Road, which leads to the Kano State Government House and the Nassarawa Palace, where Bayero currently resides. They were also displayed along Emirs Palace Road, which leads to the palace occupied by the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The locations have attracted attention because of their proximity to major government and traditional institutions amid the prolonged dispute over the Kano emirship.

However, the identities of those behind the display and their intentions remained unclear as of the time of filing this report. There was no confirmed information establishing whether the posters were part of an organised political campaign or a public display.

The appearance of the posters comes against the backdrop of the emirship crisis that intensified in May 2024, when the Kano State Government reinstated Sanusi as emir, following the repeal of the law under which Bayero had been installed.

Bayero, who was dethroned following Sanusi’s reinstatement, has continued to reside at the Nassarawa Palace, while Sanusi occupies the main emir’s palace in Kano.

The display of Tinubu, Yusuf and Bayero’s images at locations connected to the state government and the two royal residences has brought renewed attention to the intersection of political authority and traditional leadership in Kano.

Tinubu’s inclusion alongside Yusuf and Bayero has also raised questions about the message intended by those responsible for the posters. However, no evidence was available to establish that the display was connected to a particular political group, campaign or position on the emirship dispute.

Kano’s emirship crisis has remained a major political and traditional issue, involving legal disputes, the state government’s authority over traditional institutions and competing claims to the historic throne.

The dispute has also placed the relationship between political leaders and traditional authorities under public scrutiny, particularly given the influence of the Kano emirate in the state’s social, cultural and religious life.

The appearance of the posters comes as political activities and alliances attract growing attention ahead of the 2027 general elections. Nevertheless, there is no confirmed evidence linking the display to preparations for the elections or any particular candidate’s campaign.

Neither the individuals nor any organisation responsible for the posters was identified in the information available at the time of filing this report. There was also no confirmed statement from Tinubu, Yusuf, Bayero or Sanusi explaining the purpose of the display.

West Trybe reports that the appearance of the posters around Kano’s key government and traditional institutions underscores the continued public attention surrounding the emirship dispute and the relationship between political authority and traditional leadership. Until those responsible explain their intentions, the political significance of the display remains uncertain.
