Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has flagged off the construction and reconstruction of strategic roads covering four local government areas, in a move aimed at improving connectivity, security and economic activities across the state.
The projects cover road corridors linking Gusau, Bungudu, Kaura Namoda and Birnin Magaji local government areas, with the state government saying they will improve access to markets, public services and the state capital.
The governor inaugurated the projects on Tuesday, including the Tashar Abu–Kekun Waje–Bingi road, the Kwatarkwashi–Mada road and the Gusau–Jauri–Dogon Kade–Dan Isah Nasarawa Mailayi–Nasarawa Godel road.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the projects formed part of Lawal’s administration’s efforts to address infrastructure deficits and improve the living conditions of residents.
The Tashar Abu–Kekun Waje–Bingi road project, located in Bungudu Local Government Area, will involve reconstruction, earthworks, pavement construction, drainage and erosion-control measures.
According to the statement, the project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The reconstruction of the Kwatarkwashi–Mada road has been awarded to Zhongcheng Construction Nigeria Limited, with a completion period of 12 months.
The third project, covering the Gusau–Jauri–Dogon Kade–Nasarawa Mailayi–Nasarawa Godel corridor, spans approximately 53 kilometres and has been awarded to CCECC Nigeria Limited for completion within 18 months.
Speaking during the flag-off of the final phase of the Gusau–Nasarawa Godel road, Lawal described the projects as important milestones in his administration’s Rescue Mission agenda.
He said the initiative was designed to restore confidence, rebuild infrastructure, improve security and expand economic opportunities for residents.
The governor said road infrastructure remained essential to economic growth, social development, security and the general well-being of communities.
“Our administration recognises that good road infrastructure is essential for economic growth, security, social development, and the overall well-being of our people. This is why we continue to prioritise projects that directly improve the lives of our citizens and strengthen connectivity across the State,” he said.
Lawal explained that the 53-kilometre Gusau–Nasarawa Godel road would directly serve four local government areas, with different sections allocated to each council.
He said Gusau Local Government Area would have five kilometres of the road, while Bungudu would receive 12 kilometres.
Kaura Namoda was allocated nine kilometres, with Birnin Magaji accounting for the remaining 27 kilometres.
The governor said the scope of work would go beyond earthworks and pavement construction to include culverts of different types and sizes, reinforced concrete-lined drains, erosion protection and other supporting infrastructure.
He added that the project would also feature three bridges consisting of three-span, two-span and 10-span structures to improve safe movement along the corridor.
The state government said the road projects would connect communities to their respective local government headquarters and Gusau, thereby reducing transportation difficulties for residents.
Lawal said improved road access would reduce travel costs and journey times, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and enable farmers to transport agricultural produce to markets more easily.
The projects are also expected to improve access to essential services and strengthen commercial links among communities along the affected routes.
However, the statement did not disclose the total contract value of the three projects or provide details of their funding arrangements.
West Trybe reports that the road projects represent a major infrastructure intervention across four local government areas of Zamfara, with their delivery expected to influence transportation, agricultural marketing and access to public services in the benefiting communities.
