The 2026 Osun-Osogbo Festival reached its grand finale in Osogbo, Osun State, on Friday, August 7, as the Arugba led the traditional procession from the Ataoja’s palace to the Osun Sacred Grove .The closing ceremony brought devotees, traditional worshippers, tourists and cultural enthusiasts together for a day of prayers, music, dancing and traditional rites in honour of Osun, the Yoruba deity associated with the sacred river and fertility.
The 2026 edition ran from July 27 to August 7, according to the festival’s official programme.
Arugba Leads Grand Finale Procession
The Arugba is one of the central figures in the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival and plays a major role in the grand finale. During the closing procession, the Arugba carries the sacred calabash as devotees and traditional worshippers make their way towards the Osun Sacred Grove. When the election was still scheduled for August 8, the Traditional Religion Worshippers Association of Osun asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to postpone the poll, citing the expected influx of worshippers and tourists during the festival.
The group said the festival’s dates were traditionally fixed and that its grand finale would take place on August 7.
INEC later rescheduled the Osun governorship election to August 15, 2026. The commission has since continued preparations for the poll, including logistics and deployment of election technology.
The change means the festival’s grand finale is no longer taking place the day before the election, as was originally expected.
