Mr Macaroni threats have resurfaced after Nigerian actor and skit maker Debo Adedayo explained why he reduced his public criticism of government, revealing that threats during his activism had caused serious concern within his family.

The entertainer, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, made the disclosure in an interview excerpt shared by Wazobia FM. The interview, however, was recorded more than two years ago and was brought back into public attention in September 2026.

Mr Macaroni subsequently clarified the timing of the interview while insisting that the issues he discussed remained relevant.

His comments have renewed attention on the personal risks he says came with his involvement in Nigeria’s civic and political conversations, particularly around the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Mr Macaroni Says Threats Put Family Under Pressure

Mr Macaroni recalled that the period surrounding #EndSARS came with what he described as serious threats to his safety.

According to him, the situation did not affect him alone. His family became increasingly worried, with his mother repeatedly contacting him because of concerns about his safety.

He said the fear became so intense that members of his family considered arranging for him to leave Nigeria.

Mr Macaroni said he rejected the idea, maintaining that he did not want to run away from the country because of the threats. Reports quoting the interview said he recalled his family calling him in distress and eventually discussing the possibility of flying him abroad.

The account provides an important part of the background to his decision to reduce his public political commentary. However, in his more recent clarification, he stressed that threats were not the only reason he stepped back.

Why Mr Macaroni Reduced His Government Criticism

After Wazobia FM shared the older interview, Mr Macaroni took to X to explain his current position.

He said he had become tired of repeating the same arguments about governance without seeing the level of public action he believed was necessary. He also pointed to the backlash he received from Nigerians whenever he spoke about political issues.

Rather than presenting his withdrawal as a permanent end to activism, he described it as a break.

Mr Macaroni said he had been “persecuted and vilified” since beginning to speak against government and that threats had become a recurring part of the experience. At the same time, he said his main reason for taking a break was the exhaustion that came from repeatedly making the same points.

He also referred to a statement he made in March 2026 in which he strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration. According to his September explanation, that period marked the point when he decided to step back from regular political commentary.

#EndSARS Remains a Major Part of His Activism

Mr Macaroni’s political activism became particularly visible during and after the #EndSARS protests of 2020.

He was among the public figures who used their platforms to speak about police brutality, accountability and citizens’ rights. His activism continued after the main protests, including his participation in the February 2021 #OccupyLekkiTollGate protest, where he was arrested alongside other demonstrators.

His involvement in civic issues also continued into the 2023 general election. In the resurfaced interview, he recalled encouraging Nigerians to participate in the election and vote wisely.

He also acknowledged publicly identifying the candidate he personally intended to support while saying he was not telling everyone to make the same choice.

That period exposed him to strong reactions from both supporters and critics. He said the insults and hostility he encountered added to the difficulty of remaining constantly involved in political debates.

Mr Macaroni Says the Break Is Not the End

The September 2026 clarification suggests that Mr Macaroni does not regard his quieter political presence as a permanent withdrawal from public issues.

He said he was tired of repeatedly making the same arguments and wanted to spend time redefining himself and focusing on his art.

His position also came with a broader criticism of what he described as a “survival mentality” among Nigerians. He argued that citizens should move beyond simply trying to cope with difficult circumstances and demand conditions that allow them to thrive.

That distinction matters because the recent discussion initially focused heavily on the threats he described. In his own clarification, however, Mr Macaroni said the threats should not be treated as the complete explanation for his reduced political commentary.

A Personal Cost Behind Public Activism

The resurfaced interview offers a more personal look at what public activism can mean for someone whose political opinions are regularly followed by a large audience.

For Mr Macaroni, the consequences he described extended beyond online arguments. He said his family lived with fear during the period when he was receiving threats, while he continued to participate in conversations about governance and citizens’ rights.

His latest comments also show that stepping back has been about more than personal safety. He has described fatigue, public backlash and frustration with repeatedly raising the same concerns as factors behind his decision.

For now, Mr Macaroni says he wants to concentrate on his art while taking a break from the constant political commentary that has defined part of his public profile in recent years.

His comments have once again placed the relationship between entertainment, activism and public life in Nigeria under the spotlight, while making clear that the interview currently circulating online should be understood in its original context: it was recorded years earlier, even though the concerns discussed in it have been revisited by the entertainer in September 2026.
