“A Day of Firsts and Farewells”: Burna Boy Makes World Cup History as Gospel World Honors Kukudoo.

From the roar of MetLife Stadium to the quiet reverence of a Kingston chapel, July 19, 2026 became a day where music carried two very different but equally powerful messages, one of global celebration, and one of deep remembrance.

Burna Boy Carries Africa to the World Cup Final Stage

For the first time in its 96-year history, the FIFA World Cup final featured a halftime show, and at the center of it was Nigerian superstar Damini Ogulu, known worldwide as Burna Boy.

FIFA announced that Burna Boy will join co-headliners Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Justin Bieber for the historic 11-minute performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The lineup was curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. With this appearance, Burna Boy becomes the first African artist to perform at a FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show. The moment places Afrobeats alongside pop, Latin music and K-pop on football’s biggest stage.

It’s a milestone years in the making. The Grammy-winning singer already made history as the first African artist to have two albums surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify. Now, he’s taking that global reach to an audience of billions watching the final between Argentina and Spain.

Burna Boy’s presence at the tournament began earlier. He and Shakira collaborated on “Dai Dai,” the official song of the 2026 World Cup. The track blends Latin pop with Nigerian afrobeat influences and became Spotify’s most-streamed track globally, topping the Billboard Global Chart. The two performed it together during the opening ceremony in Mexico City on June 11.

Ahead of Sunday’s show, Burna Boy shared a warm rehearsal moment with Shakira, posting: “Sunday Prep! @shakira See you at the @FIFAWorldCup Final! Dai dai, ikó, dale, allez, let’s go!”

Speaking on the honor, Burna Boy said: “The FIFA World Cup is one of the few moments that truly brings the entire world together. To represent Africa on the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final Halftime Show is a privilege and a responsibility that I don’t take lightly”. He added that he’s honored to be part of a performance that “not only celebrates football and culture but also helps create greater opportunities for children through education around the world”.

The halftime show itself is part of a broader push for impact. It will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which aims to raise $100 million to expand access to education and football for children. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the event would use “football’s biggest stage to promote education”.

Beyond the music, the extended halftime, up to 30 minutes to accommodate staging, signals FIFA borrowing from the NFL’s Super Bowl playbook. It’s a new era for the tournament, one where sport and culture meet in real time.

Jamaica Says Goodbye to a Revival Voice: Tributes for David “Kukudoo” McDermott

While New Jersey celebrated, Kingston paused.Today, July 19, 2026, Jamaica held a Service of Thanksgiving at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre to honor the life of gospel singer David “Kukudoo” McDermott. Public viewing ran from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m..

Kukudoo passed away on May 8, 2026, at age 61, after a brief battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. His family announced it with a request for “grace and respect in our time of grief”.

The tributes began days earlier. A tribute concert celebrating his life and legacy was held at the same venue on Tuesday, July 14. He was also remembered during this year’s Labour Day Concert, an event where he had been a regular performer.

Government leaders led the mourning. Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness called him “a true original, a gifted son of Jamaica whose voice and spirit will never be forgotten”, praising his “quick and ready smile” and “spirit of humility”. Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange described Kukudoo as “a cultural force whose work celebrated African-derived spiritual traditions within Jamaican society”.

That description captures why Kukudoo mattered. He started singing at nine nights, or ‘dead yards’. A recording of his performance made its way onto a CD, and soon “King David (See People Business and Leave It Alone)” was playing in taxis across the island. From there, his career grew into a full-time ministry that took him overseas.

His sound was unmistakable, revival-style gospel layered with mento influences and high-energy delivery. Hits like “Jerusalem,” “King David,” and “Thank You Jesus” became anthems. He was also a fixture at the Jamaica Independence Gala.

Kukudoo saw his music as more than entertainment. Before the release of his album Jerusalem in 2020, he said he wanted “Revival music to be more recognisable and more involved in society”. His label, Tad’s International Record, later announced plans to remaster and re-release Jerusalem following his death.

At the Labour Day tribute, Minister Grange told the crowd that “Kukudoo was a bridge between the traditions of Jamaica’s revivalist faith and more contemporary Jamaican music”. Gospel community leaders called his passing “a significant loss”, noting he was “not only an entertainer but a cultural bearer”.

Two Stages, One Language

On the same day, music did what it does best: it connected people. In New Jersey, Burna Boy stood on a stage built to reach billions, carrying the sound of Africa into a space that had never had it before. “To represent Africa… is a privilege and a responsibility”, he said, words that echoed the weight of representation.

In Kingston, Kukudoo’s voice was remembered in song and silence, a voice that for decades carried revival traditions from church yards to national stages. “His music was heartfelt and deeply rooted in faith, culture and conviction”.

One was a historic first. The other, a final farewell.

Both remind us that music, whether at a World Cup final or a thanksgiving service, remains one of the most powerful ways we tell the world who we are.
