Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has received medical permission to join Chelsea on a two-year contract, with a pre-season tour in Hong Kong scheduled for next week.

BBC Sport reported on Wednesday that the 35-year-old forward is set to complete the move to Stamford Bridge, ending his five-year association with Brighton after joining the south coast club on a free transfer in 2021.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso sanctioned the signing as part of a deliberate plan to introduce more experience into a squad that fielded the Premier League‘s youngest team across the past two seasons.
The club’s co-owner, Behdad Eghbali, acknowledged toward the end of last season that Chelsea’s recruitment approach required a “tweak,” and the club has since redirected its transfer activity toward proven talent.
Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season, their lowest league placing in recent memory, and ended the campaign without a trophy. The club fielded a young side throughout, which drew repeated scrutiny from observers and the ownership group itself.
Welbeck’s career spans Manchester United, Arsenal, and Watford before his arrival at Brighton. He has scored 90 goals across 400 Premier League appearances, a record that also makes him Brighton’s all-time leading Premier League goalscorer.

His anticipated arrival at Stamford Bridge is expected to broaden the club’s attacking options. Chelsea plan to construct their forward line around Welbeck and João Pedro, with Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu each among those who could depart on loan or in permanent transfers.
Dutch striker Emmanuel Emegha, who moved to Chelsea from sister club Strasbourg earlier in the summer, is also positioned to compete for a place in Alonso’s first-team plans during the new campaign.
Chelsea have also extended an offer to Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, who worked under Alonso during the Spanish coach’s tenure at Bayer Leverkusen. Talks over a separate deal for Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson are continuing, according to the BBC Sport report.
At the back, center-back Maxence Lacroix is set to arrive from Crystal Palace on a six-year contract. An official club announcement remains pending on that deal. Full-back Marco Palestra, 21, has already completed his move to Stamford Bridge from Atalanta.
The transfer activity reflects a clear change in the direction set by Alonso since his appointment as Chelsea head coach. His predecessor oversaw a policy centered on acquiring young, high-potential players on long-term contracts, a model Eghbali publicly flagged as needing adjustment.
Welbeck joined Brighton on a free transfer in 2021 and became one of the club’s most consistent attacking performers during his time on the south coast, eventually surpassing all previous Brighton records for Premier League goals.
By landing him on a two-year contract, Chelsea secured an attacking option with substantial top-flight experience across four English clubs and an international career that ran parallel to his club commitments.
Xabi Alonso, who won the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023-24 season before moving to West London, is assembling a squad built on a mix of youth and seniority for his first full campaign in the Premier League as a manager. The Spaniard has already signaled his intention to blend experienced heads with promising young talent, a philosophy that shaped much of his success in Germany and one he appears determined to replicate at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s pre-season tour to Hong Kong, which Welbeck is expected to join next week pending the conclusion of his medical, will offer the new head coach an extended opportunity to work with an evolving squad before the league season begins. The trip is expected to include several friendly fixtures against continental opposition, giving Alonso valuable match minutes to assess combinations, fitness levels, and tactical understanding among his players ahead of a demanding domestic and European schedule.
