Reuben Fasoranti, the respected Afenifere leader and Nigerian elder statesman, has died at the age of 100, marking the end of a remarkable life devoted to education, public service, Yoruba interests and Nigeria’s democratic development. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, prompting tributes to a man whose influence extended from the classroom to government and the pro-democracy movement.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in an official statement released by the State House, described Fasoranti as an icon of principle and one of the last great figures in the progressive political tradition associated with Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His passing represents a significant loss for Afenifere, the Yoruba socio-political organisation he led, as well as the wider political community.

Fasoranti’s death closes a chapter in the life of a public figure whose career spanned generations of Nigerian political and social change.

In his condolence message, Tinubu expressed sadness over the loss and extended the Federal Government’s sympathies to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the Ondo State Government, South-West Nigeria and the Afenifere community.

The President described the late leader’s life as a lesson in “integrity, discipline, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to the Yoruba people and the unity and progress of Nigeria.”

The tribute reflected the central themes of Fasoranti’s public life: principled leadership, educational development, political participation and a sustained interest in the future of Nigeria.

His death at 100 came months after he celebrated his centenary birthday on May 11, 2026. The milestone provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on his long involvement in education, governance and political activism.

From Education to Public Service

Before becoming widely known as a political leader, Fasoranti built a career in education.

He studied English and Geography at the University College, Ibadan, now the University of Ibadan. He subsequently obtained a postgraduate diploma in education from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom and a master’s degree in education administration and school management from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

His academic background informed his work as a teacher, school principal and educationist. He also established educational institutions, including Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School, extending his contribution beyond public office.

These activities formed an important part of his legacy. While his later political career made him a prominent national figure, his work in education reflected a longstanding interest in learning and the development of younger generations.

His transition from teaching and school administration into politics brought those concerns into the broader arena of public policy and governance.

Fasoranti’s Political Journey With Awolowo

Fasoranti’s political identity was closely associated with Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the influential Nigerian nationalist and political leader whose progressive ideals shaped much of the politics of the South-West.

He joined Awolowo’s Action Group and later became involved with the Unity Party of Nigeria, maintaining his association with the progressive political tradition.

His political career reached a significant point between 1979 and 1983, when he served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

The period placed him in a position to contribute to state administration during an era when education, healthcare, rural development and employment featured prominently in the progressive political agenda.

Fasoranti subsequently became one of the most recognisable figures in Afenifere, an organisation rooted in Yoruba political thought and public affairs.

As its leader, he became a prominent voice on issues affecting the Yoruba people and Nigeria more broadly. His public positions frequently reflected concerns about justice, good governance, federalism and the country’s political direction.

Afenifere and Nigeria’s Democratic Struggle

Fasoranti’s political legacy also includes his involvement in the struggle against military rule.

During the years of military dictatorship, he stood alongside other political activists who opposed authoritarian government and advocated democratic governance. President Tinubu specifically acknowledged Fasoranti’s role in that struggle, saying he had contributed immensely to Nigeria and, at the risk of his life, fought for the democracy the country enjoys today.

His association with the National Democratic Coalition, commonly known as NADECO, and pro-democracy figures reflected his participation in efforts to restore democratic rule.

For many of his supporters, this chapter of his life reinforced his reputation as a politician who remained involved in public affairs beyond the pursuit of elective office.

His leadership of Afenifere further extended that influence. The organisation became an important platform for discussing Yoruba interests, constitutional arrangements, political representation and the relationship between Nigeria’s federal government and its constituent regions.

Fasoranti’s long-standing advocacy for true federalism and social justice remained central to how his political career was remembered.

Tinubu Pays Tribute to Late Afenifere Leader

Tinubu’s statement highlighted the personal relationship between the President and the late elder statesman.

The President recalled visiting Fasoranti at his residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of his decision to contest the presidency. According to Tinubu, Fasoranti offered prayers and counsel during that visit and predicted that he would become President during his lifetime.

Tinubu wrote that the late leader had told him he would become President and added that the prayer had been answered.

The President also reflected on Fasoranti’s recent centenary celebration, describing it as a moment to honour not only his longevity but also his legacy of service.

“I had hoped Papa would also be around with us for my second term,” Tinubu said, expressing regret that the elder statesman would not be present to witness the remainder of his administration.

He concluded his tribute with a prayer for Fasoranti’s soul and comfort for the family and others mourning his death.

Fasoranti’s death leaves Afenifere without the leader who had become one of its most familiar public figures. His passing also marks the loss of a participant in several defining periods of Nigeria’s political history, from the progressive politics of the First Republic to military rule and the restoration of civilian government.

His legacy extends beyond his leadership of a socio-political organisation. It encompasses his years in education, his service as Ondo State’s finance commissioner, his association with Awolowo’s political movement and his involvement in democratic activism.

For Afenifere, the challenge ahead will include preserving its political identity and continuing its engagement with issues affecting the Yoruba people and Nigeria.

The circumstances of Fasoranti’s death and the official announcement have been confirmed, while details of his burial arrangements remain subject to further announcements.

At 100, Reuben Fasoranti leaves behind a long record of public service and political engagement. His life connected generations of Nigerian history, and his passing closes a chapter in the story of a man whose influence reached far beyond his home state.
