The global rapper said her Nigerian pastor inspired her to speak out about the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, urging celebrities and social media influencers to use their platforms to draw attention to the situation. That detail, the pastor, is the one not revealed.

“For Nigeria personally, my pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him,” she said. “And of course, I have a lot of Nigerian barbs, but what I started seeing was the brutality with which Christians are being treated there just for being Christian.” She did not identify the pastor by name.

Minaj made the remarks during an X Takeover event at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, where she discussed her personal connection to Nigeria and called for greater international attention to reports of violence against Christians in the country. The event was hosted in collaboration with X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, and drew a politically engaged audience.

Minaj, who refers to her fans as Barbz, questioned why more public figures were not speaking about the issue, suggesting that some people might avoid discussing subjects they consider controversial. Her frustration was directed squarely at fellow entertainers, not governments.

“And I thought, why isn’t anyone making a big deal out of this, you know? And sometimes when things aren’t cool to talk about, people don’t talk about it,” she added. The remark was pointed, even if no one was named.

“So right now, actually, I’m hoping that more celebrities or people, influencers, come aboard the train to start speaking out about what’s happening to Christians in Nigeria. And I look forward to doing more to help in that way, in that cause,” Minaj said.

In December 2025, Minaj spoke about her connection to the country during an appearance at AmericaFest, where she also cited her Nigerian pastor and Nigerian fans while explaining why the issue mattered to her. Austin was not the first time she raised the subject.

At the time, she expressed concern about reports of people being kidnapped or attacked while attending church services. Those earlier remarks drew significant online reaction in Nigeria.

In November 2025, she spoke at a United Nations-related event in New York, where she called for greater protection for Christians in Nigeria and other parts of the world. Three separate public platforms across roughly one year carry the same message from her.

The Federal Government has consistently rejected claims of a coordinated or systematic persecution of Christians in the country. That government position stands in direct tension with the claims Minaj has been amplifying.

Her remarks have since generated intense online reactions across Nigerian social media spaces, sparking fresh conversations among fans regarding international commentary on local security and religious matters. The reactions have not been uniform.

Reflecting on the silence surrounding the situation, Minaj pointed out that public figures often avoid speaking about serious issues when those topics are not considered popular or fashionable to discuss. That argument is now a recurring fixture in her public appearances on this subject.

She credited her Nigerian pastor with deepening her personal relationship with the country and bringing the plight of its Christian population to her notice. No other international entertainer of her profile has made a comparable claim of personal clerical ties to Nigeria.

She encouraged other entertainers and influencers to speak publicly about religious persecution and support affected communities. Whether that call produces any takers remains an open question that the Austin event did not resolve.

Nicki Minaj’s Nigerian pastor connection, as she described it in Austin, is now the documented foundation of a campaign that has reached the United Nations, AmericaFest, and Tesla’s Giga Texas, all within the same twelve-month stretch.
